184238 2003-10-17 09:49:00 works for me 2 but i thought many can use the automatic updates or is that not a preference for some?

if u have it, u can still use it when u want, but it mite result in bigger downloads as auto updates just does it when it comes out...

184240 2003-10-19 07:05:00 Have a look at this page (www.updatexp.com) and this page (www.theage.com.au) for information that may help. If it still does not work let us know. Susan B (19)
184241 2003-10-19 07:52:00 I think the answer may lie partly in the second reference site given by Susan. Microsoft seem to be using various servers including doubleclick for downloading update files.

I had the same thing as you after I installed Windows XP Pro, and I was getting all these firewall messages asking if I wanted to allow a Microsoft service connect to www.doubleclick.com something like that. I had reluctantly to say yes in order to get the new windows update software that enables the Windows Update function to work.

So check the hosts file as described if you have one, or temporarily re-name it from hosts to hosts.txt, say. Also check firewall settings in case thats blocking access, and also disable any ads blocker you may have running.

184242 2003-10-19 07:57:00 An aside...........
Another thing that got up my nose with XP Pro was all the Microsoft 'phone home' pop up messages I got at every turn. I even got one when idly playing with Solitaire of all things.
Kerio firewall is now full of MS blocks. Some of these phone home things may be innocuous but that the last thing one wants by default when you set up a new system and are finding ones way around.
