2003-10-17 02:19:00 My power supply is a bit old and my friend's got a newer one he's willing to give me. Can I just change them just like that? kimchi (3918)
2003-10-17 02:22:00 Technically you can, but beware that it might be designed for a different form factor case, so you might have to get a new backing plate for your case or something - but go ahead and see if it fits.

Another thing is that you'll have to unplug all the power cables from your CD drives, floppy drives, and hard disk drives, not to mention the motherboard, before removing the PSU (Power Supply Unit) - these cables are easy enough to unplug though, because they'll be the ones leading to the PSU.

2003-10-17 02:29:00 It depends on how old. And some "proprietary" supplies are very non-standard. I have seen a suggestion that some Dell supplies use the standard ATX connectors, but have changed the pin connections in such a way that they can damage non-Dell motherboards. Graham L (2)
2003-10-18 20:29:00 DELLS........well I've found out that dell have a slightly different powersupply to the 'standard' atx............the 'standard' atx p4 powersupply has a 'p6' plug it's wired so that there is certain voltages from the leads......(sorry cant quite remember the details) BUT the dell which also uses the 'p6' plug is different in that their 'p6' plug uses two wires supplying the ram slots with 3.3 volts ......on the standard atx powersupply ONE of those wires is 5 VOLTS so..............be warned ......check the wiring diagram thing on the powersupply to be SURE that ALL outputs are the same as the DELL or you could be having a problem drcspy2 (4743)
