I've got about a fortnight to get my A into G and get myself a router coz tonight I'm going to be phoning up telecom/Ihug and getting them to switch me onto ADSL on Nov 1st (Not enough time for this month to justify forking out the extra $$).

I'm looking to get a router, and have it just plugged into my PC which will ave two NIC's in it.

That way I can have my PC as a firewall, and have squid on it being a proxy (Not a mandatory proxy, but good for browsing).
That way Im also taking a bit of hassle out of setting up port-forwarding from the router (I would hope at least)

So I need a router (Obvoisly with an RJ45 connection), that can do:
NAT (Just in case I needa plug it into my switch if I take my PC away for a day)
Port-forwarding (So I can host FTP/Proxy and maybe DNS eventually)

And anything else you guys think may be worthwhile

Im on a budget, so $200 or less, so likely second-hand Im assuming.

What would you all recommend? Is it worth me going router or would an External Modem suffice?

Cheers

Chill.

183970 2003-10-16 20:05:00 I have installed a couple of the Dick Smith adsl router/4 point hub www.dse.co.nz and they are great for home networks. They may well not allow all the functionality you require (as you want to run Squid etc) but thats my plug for DSE products. Dolby Digital (160)
183971 2003-10-16 20:08:00 well as far as i know if you get a modem it wont have NAT on it only routers do (hence router vs modem).

If going second hand i would recomend a dlink dsl-500 or similar they go for about $300 brand new so should be able to get one for about $200 second hand if ya can find one.

But assuming you are setting up a proxy then you just need a cheap modem really, just make sure its external so many people have probs with internal ones.

183973 2003-10-16 20:41:00 We used to have a Nokia Ni-500 here at work but have since changed to D-Link DSL-500 and it works heaps better!
Also installed quite a few Dynalink RTA-220's and they are pretty good too.

I would go for a router as they are much more reliable and as you said yourself, may need to plug it into the switch if your PC is away.
With NAT they also work as a basic firewall.

183974 2003-10-16 21:05:00 Alcatel speedtouch router is what I have been using after I ditched the Nokia Ni500. Very easy to use and to network (so I have been told but haven't done yet).

Interesting comments here about firewall protection with routers. Using www.grc.com I tried both Nokia and Alcatel.
The Nokia result was all ports "closed" yet the Alcatel came up all ports "stealth". This was done in both cases with ZA enabled and disabled with the same result.

183975 2003-10-16 22:14:00 Dick Smith had an adsl router on special a week or two ago. It also had a 4 port 10/100 huib built in and whats more it was only $180 Now I don't confess to know how reliable or how good it is but it seemed like a pretty good deal. Odin (227)

183977 2003-10-17 00:24:00 Chill, the Dynalink RTA300 ADSL Router with 4port switch, should suit you perfectly.

It includes a SPI firewall, NAT, 4ethernet ports and a usb port, port forwarding (virtual server), DMZ, DCHP etc etc. In total, it ownz :) I think they are going for about $200+ but if you want to pay for an alcatel ($400+) then suit yourself. I don't think the alcatels have much advantage over the RTA300 if at all.

Go over to dynalink.co.nz and look up the spec sheet for it. And pricespy should bring up some good prices. QMB aint the cheapest for this one :p

183978 2003-10-17 01:12:00 Actually, QMB are cheapest on the RTA300 ;-)

That router sounds good... Keep the input coming guys, Im learning a lot here.

Does it matter if a portscan shows up as closed or stealth?

Basically, Im looking to spend sub-$200 if possible...

PCSale have a Plexuscom ADSL ext. router Ethernet/USB interface for $118 which would be a bargain price.. but for how much compromise on functionality and features?!

Did I hear that Telecom have dropped the $99 joining fee for this month, or Nov?
