183941 2003-10-16 10:12:00 I continually get messages from Microsoft telling me that there is a critical update available for my computer. I have downloaded this update and the status was "successful" Why is this happening please? summertime (2568)
183942 2003-10-16 10:25:00 have you tried re downloading this update???? stu140103 (137)
183943 2003-10-16 10:37:00 I had something similar with a DirectX critical update. First couple of times I thought they were patching the patch again but then realised it was the same. I have deactivated window update and gone back to manual downloads.

183944 2003-10-16 20:52:00 My son has run XP for 2 years, knows nothing about computers & has never done an update, even sp1. He has never had any trouble.
I, on the other hand, installed all the updates, and ended up with a slow buggy OS.

I have reinstalled and avoided updates. No problems & fast.
As they say, if it aint broke, don't fix it!

As these updates are for critical patches, something is broken and therefore you should fix it.

I only download critical/security patches, the recommended updates are optional and I have only ever downloaded one optional patch and that was to fix a specific issue I was having with the Indeo codec missing from SP1.

Regarding the repeating notification of an update, I have also had this, and it appears to be not an infrequent problem. I manually go and check for updates, and just used to remove this one particular patch from the list each time. It has been happening for the last 5 months, yet the other day for the first time it was no longer presenting itself on the list again. Hopefully MS and my catalog file on the PC have finally agreed upon what I have installed already :D

I would just set your system to check for updates, but not to download or install without your permission first - that way you can remove the re-occurring update from the list.

183948 2003-10-17 07:52:00 Thanks Hibino but it is not a virus and wasn't sent by e-mail to me. Windows Update notify me that a critical update is available for my computer and when I downloaded it (I had a choice whether to or not) the download status was successful. The second time I received the notification I inadvertantly downloaded it again. I am still receiving notification that this same update is available for download. I just wanted to know how to stop these notifications arriving on my screen. Thanks for your help too Jen. I will just ignore them from now on. summertime (2568)
183949 2003-10-17 11:19:00 ah! i see!!!!
you can right click on "my computer" and select property and then select the update tab and disable it. you also can go the controlpanel==>admin tools=>services and disable the automatic update service

183950 2003-10-17 18:23:00 Hi summertime
Just to reinforce what Jen C said & say that you're not alone in this.
It's a known problem, as I found out when it happened to me early last month.
My guess is you're on Win98 or SE (Think it only applies there, though can't remember for sure ).
There is a registry fix, but I'm such a newbie I wasn't brave enough then to consider "opening up the innards." Now I just click Notify Me Later. having found out when checking my update History that I've installed the darned thing 4 times in my early ignorance - meekly accepting everything Microsoft said was a critical for security without reading the numbers.

If any PF1er thinks I should do something about that, I'll try to find the info again. Meanwhile, it's merely a minor irritation.

(Interesting that 2 weeks of reading PF1 has given me the confidence to actually contemplate going into the registry. You're all doing a great job there...)

BTW do I need Microsoft's latest recommended Root Certificate Update? Once I'd have meekly accepted it. Now you've all made me picky......
