183925 2003-10-16 09:11:00 why when i play Formula 1 Challenge '99-'02 does it lock up sometimes or for that matter why do computers lock up?

I have a AMD Duron 900 mhz
32 meg 3d prophet
192 mb ram
win98s3

that is over the minimum requirements.

Could it be because of not enough ram or whathaveyou?

It is quite frustrating when you starting getting into a game and then it continues to lock up

183926 2003-10-16 09:37:00 Does it lock up straight away? Or does it take a while?

Do you have all the latest Windows Updates installed? Importantly Direct X updates as well?

To hazard a guess I'd say the game, which usually would put the computer under stress to render video, audio etc etc is causing your processor to overheat. This would be most likely if it takes a little while before the PC locks up.

Check all your fans are operating, and that the computer is in a well ventilated environment.

If you have temperature monitoring software on the machine, try watching the temp and see if it goes up when you stress the machine.

183927 2003-10-16 09:41:00 Could low power output from the PSU be causing it as well? PoWa (203)

Yup, definitely a possibility. A bit hard to guess at this stage, depends on if it dies straight away or if it takes a while, whether it re-sets or BSOD's etc etc

183929 2003-10-16 19:14:00 you may need better graphics drivers or via 4in1 drivers etc or be overclocking too much kiwibeat (304)
183930 2003-10-18 21:02:00 it takes a while do lock up - i could be playing someone over the internet or just booted up but eventually it will lock up, i do have problems with my power supply fan it may not be running at full speed as after a boot up from being turned off i have to manually touch the fan with a screw driver to get it going.

i have the via 4in1 drivers - no overclocking been done and i have directx9b from pcworld cd

183931 2003-10-18 22:21:00 Quite often games are released before they are really ready, so the first thing you should do after installing any game is to go on the publishers site and apply the latest patch. If no joy see their FAQ regarding common problems. parry (27)
