184459 2003-10-18 10:18:00 With regard to Norton Ghost, what exactly is a ghost image and what is it's size in regard to the drive it has imaged.
I note that it can copy an HD image or partition to a CD or DVD, but with todays drives being in excess of 100GB how does it make this image to a piece of media that may hold about 700 MB.
Can I assume the image is only a fraction of what it is backing up and IF that's the case how big an HD or partition could it copy

184460 2003-10-18 10:41:00 An example:

My laptop has a ghost image that takes 6 CDs. Its compressed, so the actual disk image is larger.

My desktop has 3 x 2 GB ghost files as a single spanned image.

If ghosting to CD, it spans the file, to however many CDs are needed. You just keep them coming.

If ghosting to HDD, it appears to create 2 GB files, and the logic here is that its the maximum filesize for earlier Windows systems.

There are probably settings that can modify this behaviour, but its OK for me at the default settings

184461 2003-10-18 11:59:00 The secret is to keep your actual install or OS partition relatively small around 6 to 8 gigs, and do any installs aside from office to another partition. That way when you create and Image and compress it you can keep the number of cd's down considerably. I have a 6 gig partition and I use 2 CD's admitidly I haven't used the entire 6 gig partition yet. Odin (227)
184462 2003-10-18 19:36:00 Ghost is excellent program (written by a NZ'er apparently and sold to norton for 6million !!!) it 'images' EVERYTHING and writed to a file or cd or dvd it'll compress the file to about half size approx........ drcspy2 (4743)

That is excellent advice and what I did myself with my primary hard drive, though I allowed 10GB for Win XP and programs. The rest of one 80GB HDD is divided into three partitions for my data and one of those partitions is reserved for the Ghost images.

Thus I can backup my C: Windows partition with Ghost to the E: drive as well as fit the image neatly onto several CDs. I do the same with my data on the D: and H: drives.

My second hard drive is used as a backup for the primary hard drive in case that fails and if they both failed (horrors!) then hopefully the CDs will give up the Ghost (images)! :D

184464 2003-10-18 23:47:00 Pre-Ghosting housekeeping is also important to help keep image sizes down. I always delete all temp files including temporary internet files, get rid of all index.dat files because they are automatically recreated anyway, then do a scandisk and defrag before imaging.

My image profile is also set to ignore a number of file types and directories that I don't need to back up, but that requires a little more time and experience with Ghost to get operating. For example, I don't image my swapfile (on the basis that windows will recreate this too, but since I haven't needed to use an image for sometime, this remains to be seen:O)

Cheers

184465 2003-10-19 00:19:00 Another option is to use (if you have it installed) Nero HD Backup. It is built into Nero - not an extra. I have found it easier to use than Ghost, but does not compress the files. Again, your C partition needs to be relativly small as otherwise, you will need a lot of CD's. In my case it is 2.38gb which fits on 4 CD's.

184466 2003-10-19 00:21:00 Susan B............i'd be very wary of keeping images on the hdd......If that hdd dies then your images will be gone also.......i've replaced hdd's less than 2 yrs old........ drcspy2 (4743)
184467 2003-10-19 00:22:00 yeh.......and nero hdd backup facility also copies the blank space on teh drive so you can use a LOT of cds' lol drcspy2 (4743)
184468 2003-10-19 01:51:00 That's why I keep the C partition small. Susan also backs up to CD as well as another partition. So do I on a second HD using PM.
