184473 2003-10-18 19:33:00 Very nice. My though haven't times changed, lots of GUI tools in distros these days-still have no registry in Linux thank god. I'm doing a RH 8 install at the mo and I know at the end of it there will be a fully functional OS with all the apps and tools to be very productive indeed. With a total of one reboot and not be subject to all those nasty winbugs and trogans out there......................... mark.p (383)

You obviously don't recognise sarcasm when you read it. :D

Linux might have a Penguin, but M$ has a Whirling Dervish. His name is Bill Gates

184478 2003-10-19 01:42:00 And it's had "Bob", and a paperclip. :D Graham L (2)
184479 2003-10-19 02:30:00 I bet Microsoft regrets making that paperclip...

Anyway, truth be told, I think the name Tux isn't very good. I'd rather just call it Penguin.

And where's this proof that Tux is a male penguin? Because you can't really tell with penguins, can you? Or is this just a case of the sexist, ignorant developers.

Really, no OS has a decent logo - a flag, a penguin, a cog, an apple, and the list goes on.

But, you got to admit, the wee penguin is rather cute :p

Here is a bit of history for Tux (you probably aren't interested, but I'm going to post it anyway :p)

It is sometimes (but probably apocryphally) reported that the name was derived from Torvalds UniX, a name suggested by James Hughes, as opposed to the explanation that penguins look vaguely like they are wearing a tuxedo.

According to Jeff Ayers, Linus Torvalds had a "fixation for flightless, fat waterfowl" and Torvalds claims to have contracted penguinitis after being gently nibbled upon by a penguin. "Penguinitis makes you stay awake at nights just thinking about penguins and feeling great love towards them." Torvalds' supposed illness is of course a joke, but he really was bitten by a little penguin on a visit to Canberra

So you can blame the Aussies for the penguin logo ....

and its an all singing, dancing paper clip as well. The Penguin can't even ride a bike either
