184551 2003-10-20 04:34:00 OK, well I was going to stay out of this thread since all these "mine is better than yours" threads and posts get up my nose but I have to say what I think .

I have got Red Hat 9 dual booting with Win XP and I have to say that the thing that really puts me off is the whole relearning process . I knew it would be like that and expected to have to put in time reading, exploring and rethinking my computer habits but even so, one does need a lot of time and patience to get one's head around it all .

If you have lots of time, patience and determination it would be fun and I am sure it would be quite a bit easier for a complete computer newbie with no experience of Windows (or someone with prior experience of Unix) as they would not have to relearn all their habits . It may be a breeze for some but not everyone finds it easy to learn new "languages" .

Frustration is a big deterent to me and probably lots of others and without a solid purpose for using Linux one can easily just give up and return to what one knows best - Windows .

Incidentally, I also find Linux to be very slow in loading - it takes ages and as a complete newbie I do not have the nous to be able to reduce the bootup time as the experts claim is able to be done .

Programs also load much slower than in Windows, I have noticed . Forget about telling me to recompile the kernel - you may as well be talking a foreign language! :D

Horses for courses - I am happy for those who use and love Linux but instead of wasting energy defending your choice how about diverting that energy into helping those who are struggling? Chill is doing a fine job of that, as are one or two others . Specifically, those Linux help pages are still rather incomplete . ;-)

184552 2003-10-20 04:51:00 May I just say that, technically you can actually contribute to Windows. It's just that, before doing that, you have to do one of a few things, such as become a government, get employed as an software engineer by Microsoft, subscribe to the MSDN, or other such stuff. All of which require a lot of effort and cost, compared to contributing to Linux (and really they both do, because you have to learn a programming language first - unless you just want to add your own comment to the Linux source before compiling it...) agent (30)
184553 2003-10-20 04:58:00 Folk who haven't used MS Windows before find it differcult too. Using a modern distro such as RH 8 is no more difficult and possibly easier to learn than MS Windows from scratch. And with the books available these days.......................... mark.p (383)

Yes, Susan, I find that too... unless you've got a really fast machine.

Thats interesting. I can't say that I've noticed a difference. Although when I was a KDE user I did find that the KDE/Qt apps took a bit longer to load compared to GTK/GNOME apps (a couple of seconds usually). I can't say what its like now as I don't use any KDE/Qt apps.

184557 2003-10-20 06:29:00 I'll have to admit, linux hasn't got as good as windows (yet), but i think linux is better, so i belive what i belive.

For some people linux is better, but for some, windows is better.

184558 2003-10-20 08:45:00 I second those last two posts..
Qt/KDE does seem rather slow compared with GNOME/Gtk

And it does require a bit of re-learning, no denying that.. but ilikelinux is right... Yet.... I said to Susan B, 4 years max before its REAL popular :-)

184560 2003-10-21 21:48:00 What about OS/2?

I know a few companies still use that for their P.O.S (point of sales not piece of sh!t) machines, although people are still chanting OS/2 is dead, possibly MS guys.

I like Linux too, who reckons easier is better? I always like getting involved as much as I can when configuring and I hate how MS keep telling me how I have to do things, as well as other Vendors, it's install this, install that, check this, check that... and when all this is done, I have not a clue where or what has been done, except the result is that the program should work.
