184840 2003-10-20 21:12:00 Did you check out this site (digitalcameras.co.nz) as they have Sony and Canon digital video cameras that can be purchased duty free if travelling. Fire-and-Ice (3910)
184841 2003-10-21 03:05:00 They were not keen on getting Sony and Canon, as they were told that they'd have to pay extra for software...whereas with JVC, no software is required, to upload onto the computer, before burning to a disc.... caffy (2665)

Are you sure about that? I found that difficult to believe since my Canon digicam (non-video) comes with software to upload to my computer so I have just looked at the site recommended above. Sure enough, the cameras there have "Bundled software" listed amongst their "in the box" features.

The cameras may be a bit more pricey than the one your family have chosen anyway, but I just thought I would make you aware of it.

Any digital (non-video) camera that requires special software to upload with under later operating systems, is worth avoiding.

If the USB connected camera does not show up in Windows XP or ME as a removeable drive, then its either very old, or designed in a manner that leaves something to be desired.

Its important as when away from home, you often get access to a PC, but not to load a lot of software on.

Its fine to use the software that comes with it for simplicity, but you shouldn't have to for functionality.
