| 184542 | 2003-10-19 22:41:00 | Im not the only one... Most users know its not good practise to 'root around'! Ask Jen, CyberChuck, and anybody else.. Its just not worth the risk. Admittedly I did the first time I installed Linux, but I broke it too quickly.. and learned my lesson. Havent done that since! |

| 184543 | 2003-10-19 23:09:00 | I had switched over to RH8 and was goiung to do so permanently... until I tried to update the video drivers (NVidia's installer doesn't work too well) and stuffed up the entire OS! :( Linux could be great... if they simplified the driver installs. | wintertide (1306) | ||

If you downloaded the ones from the nVidia.com site, then its nVidia's fault.. and to be honest its not terribly hard! Try just the 'nv' drivers instead! |

| 184545 | 2003-10-20 02:42:00 | You're quite right Chilling most of the time I am using an admin account in Windows. I have been known to have had things set up that way before though. So a self-compiled Mozilla would be quicker to load. I might have to try it out at some stage when I've got more time and HDDs. |

Mine works fine. It's most certainly not a common Xfree86 problem. It could however be because the wrong mouse type was selected. On the topic of logging in as which kind of user, its commonly known that you should never ever log in as root unless you want to make some configuration changes or install software. If you need to do that, you should "su" to root and then switch back to your user when you're finished doing what you're doing. |

So really the issue is user education, isn't it? There is no reason you must log into an NT,2K,XP etc machine with Admin priviliges, so MS can hardly be blamed for that. |

| 184548 | 2003-10-20 03:53:00 | Actually, when you install XP, you get the option of creating user accounts at the end... All with Admin rights. When installing RedHat, at the end of it you get the chance to create user accounts... All with USER rights! Why do I feel like Im defending Linux and its credability here.. :-( |

| 184550 | 2003-10-20 04:09:00 | Because it's a total waste of time . Like arguing about what car is best . People have fought wars about religions . I've said it before and I'll say as many times as necessary: There are newsgroups which cater for people who want to "convert" those of other religions (OS or car or politics) . They are called "advocacy" groups . For those who want to abuse each other, there are groups for them too . This is a help forum for technical problems . Even a fridge can be a technical problem . A bit of OT is OK . :D But the closed-mind arguments you get in this sort of "discussion" means it is just a total waste of time and disk space . |
