184514 2003-10-18 23:04:00 Hello

My modem used to get these errors each 2 days or so ... Now, it gets them each 3-4 weeks. The error I get is error 797 and occasionally a few other ones which is related to software issues (sourced by google search).

The thing is each time its fixes itself by a nite or two.
Or, each time I take the modem card out and put it back it, it always works correctly afterwards.

Its a laptop mini PCI (under the keyboard). The LAN works faultlessly all the time. It only happens with the modem. Under system properties, it has a yellow exclamation mark and says code 10.

Anyone have answers why it behaves this way? Seems like the soln is to take out and put back in ...

184515 2003-10-18 23:24:00 The error can occur if the modem is no longer visible to the system, sounds like a system conflict somewhere that causes the modem to work only some of the time. Jim B (153)
184516 2003-10-18 23:50:00 the same thing used to happen to be (on win2k and a desktop pc)
i got a modem and it uninstall it self every week or so (completely removed it self form hardware manager didn't even show "Modems" under devises)
it fixed it self when i:
pulled all of my PCI devises out
reset my bios
ran Norton Utilitys (win doctor)

so far so good I've been going straight for the last 2 months without a drink...i mean problem with my modem

this may not help much but i'd wipe your bios and make it re do your IRQs and if you can find it get a copy of Win Doctor or something that looks at your registries (other than Ad-Aware)

184517 2003-10-18 23:56:00 Research suggests:

This is a problem with the modem card itself, it is requesting IO resources that are sometimes not available behind a PCI-PCI bridge .

The device properties report that the modem is not working because of an error "code 10"

Modem PC-Cards are usually assigned resources based on standard COM ports (IO address 0x3f8, 0x2f8, 0x3e8 or 0x2e8) . These addresses are sometimes not available on the PCI bus on some motherboards .

Its most likely a driver issue, where the driver gets displaced after a conflict, as its not the correct one?

184518 2003-10-19 02:20:00 thanks for the replies . As for the driver, its obtained from the manufacturer's website . 3Com also work and also fails sometime, the more later driver seems to be the manufacturer's one .

As for the bios . Yup tried . For windows, I have done a recovery reset in the past . The same things returned within a week .

Suppose the only solution is to wait for it . . or to pull out and put back in .

The mini PCI is a modem and LAN combo . The LAN always work faultessly, its with the modem . . . When I take it out and put back in, I don't even need to turn the laptop on without the card . I just take it out, put it back in immediately and turn it back on and then it works . . .

Thx

184519 2003-10-19 02:55:00 I tend to agree with you scOut I had some problems with my PC modem some years ago, and spent a lot of time on it. In the end the only thing that worked was to deselect just about everthing in the device manager, turn the machine off and let Windows sort it out. Its not exactly the same as your solution but the principal is the same. Rod ger (316)
184520 2004-11-04 21:57:00 Hi guys, I am writing about something related to an old thread of mine ....

OK, so what I have done since is just adapted to the laptop. The card fumbles up when I move it ... I don't know why .. The past days I have not moved it, it just sat on my desk so its been pretty sweet, maybe the old fumble each month on avg at most.

OK, as some may be aware my win2k had issues with activeX when I installed some security softwares. I could not revert back and get my own access to Internet Options. So I did a format ..t hat is fine.

Now, when I installed and get the thing back on working the modem fumbles up again and I think this time it may be dead. When I try to dial out it says code 680 no dial tone. I restart and then then says code 797 modem does not exist when the network card is working fautlessly - remember its a combo mini pci card. Now I went to the kitchen and the phone was flashing "red" I picke it up and I hear this sound "tig tig tig tig .... ... ..." endlessly.

This morning the card got itself out of code 797 so I dial out again I got the message no dial one code 680. Then I was using my old PC and dial out to PC World to post this message right now and I could hear tig tig tig tig ... I had to disconnect the modem cabel from the laptop until I got a good connection. When the laptop was conneccted the PC could connect online but it was like 14k connection and v v slow...

So is the modem dead? I tried updating drivers and following the instructions step by step, I have also tried taking it out and putting it back in to no avail ... However modem diagnostics query command in control panel works however ... Last yr I had the issue with code 797 now and then (but without the tig tig tig sound) but each time it got sent for analysis for the warranty it had worked when they had it .. so yeah.
