184914 2003-10-19 22:31:00 Is it possible to set up an internet cafe with dumb terminals and running gaming software from a server instead of buying PCs for each terminal?

If it is possible (and im sure it is) what are the disadvantages?

bye for now

184915 2003-10-20 00:08:00 hmm not sure if you could do this because the games prob wouldnt support it. But the first disadvantage would be bandwidth !! you have to run coms to every pc about game and about what other games are doing, instead of just what they are doing. Budda (2736)
184916 2003-10-20 00:36:00 Normally for LAN games, a copy of the game has to be on each PC. As dumb terminals have no storage, then there is a problem. Keep in mind though, that you can purchase "barebone" systems that are cheap.
Also, you may be pushed now to purchase a dumb terminal cheaper than a barebones system.

Sorry to kill a good idea :-(

184918 2003-10-20 01:10:00 Anything is possible, it's what you make of it. Which is why games are developed to be installed on single machines and not ran from a server but the server can become your computers hard drive.

The problem would be the slow down of the server as the hard drive is working overtime, lagging constantly as the server tries to determine/predict all movements based on each player, the network will make the servers work too high.

To lessen the server load is why client-side software is needed so the server needs only worry about the server-side of things, and if the server is doing both client and serverside you'll end up bringing the server to a crawl and it won't be fun for anyone.

You also still need to licence the games, which is a big cost.
