184920 2003-10-19 21:21:00 anyone got this printer to work with Win XP? Can't find a driver anywhere. Ronald (196)
184921 2003-10-19 21:34:00 Are you sure about the model? HC-8E?

Its not an HL-8E by any chance?

184922 2003-10-19 22:41:00 I agree with GF it surely is a Brother HL-8E, in which case it is supported by Windows Xp out-of-the-box. Just run the Add-a-Printer wizard and select the HL-8e driver from within the Brother printers.

Cheers, Babe.

184923 2003-10-22 01:09:00 I am assured by my friend it is an early Brother HC.
I see there are plenty of HL drivers.

184924 2003-10-22 01:33:00 Try using an HP Laserjet driver.

Start at HP Laserjet 4 then try 4P etc

184925 2003-10-22 01:34:00 Sorry! You may need to try older HP LaserJet drivers first like HP laserjet or HP LaserJet II etc CYaBro (73)
184926 2003-10-22 02:06:00 I'm pretty sure it's an HL-8 ... I can't find any references to a Brother HC. Of cource the HL is an "old Brother" printer ... it's no longer made. I think it will work with an HP LaserJet II driver. Graham L (2)
184927 2003-10-22 02:51:00 A million apologies. I got back to the fool and he meant to write HL 8E

You are all correct except it does not want to run on his new XP Pro machine. Maybe a fresh driver download would work? Or is this another XP incompatibility?

184928 2003-10-22 03:45:00 Well, it's not really an XP incompatibility. The HL-8 was "obsolete" long before XP, and I think that the hardware manufacturers are responsible for the drivers. Brother couldn't write an XP driver for a non-yet thought of OS, and I suppose they want to sell you a new Brother printer. ;-) It seems to be a popular printer ... there's one place which will build you a new one from spare parts. :D

We seem to be united in our belief that LaserJet drivers will work ... so if you can find one of those (probably the LJII) you might be lucky.
