184863 2003-10-19 10:59:00 My monitor seems to be dying :-(
Started showing signs of it early this year when it started to flicker to purple and changed color to purple momentarily before switching back to normal. But that was only like 5 seconds of purple screen

Since then it has gradually increased that time before it changes back to normal. I had to give it a bit of slap on the sides to change it back to normal. Now it seems to stay on purplish color for quite awhile ( 20-40min) even with all my slapping and punchin on the sides to fix it.

Is there anyway i can save my dying monitor or extend its life span a bit more? Its a 4 1/2 yr old 15" Diamond View. I need it to stay alive till the end of this year before i get myself a new one for Xmas!

I know its dangerous opening monitor covers but is there a way i can somehow tweak it or something without taking it to the PC shop???
I dont mind opening it if its a safe enough tweak :D

Thankxx

184864 2003-10-19 11:26:00 I don't know too much about monitors but I think the purple haze is one of slow death. Have a look at this old PF1'ers site (http://www.oh-bugger.net.nz/) for monitor info. Acouple of others here a pretty knowledgable when it comes to these things try to atract Billy T's attention.

Cheers Murray P

PS. Caution. High voltages in monitors.

184865 2003-10-19 11:36:00 One of our old monitors has been doing a similar thing for about the last year at least. The colours turn like a rainbow and I have to degauss it up to 10 times to get it to display correctly. It's almost 8 years old and I'm wondering when that old thing is going to die :) segfault (655)

I had a real strong magnet once... Didnt realise what I had done an I waved it in front of the computer monitor at school.. It was an apple all in wonderful box too... Luckily it only lasted ten minutes before class finished... back in the days...

And taking the magnet home that night for a project, only to wake up in the morning and find some genius had stuck it to the TV... Rainbow for about 6-7 days... :-(

184867 2003-10-19 11:58:00 Thankx murray, i will wade thru that info and see if i can find something

Segfault unfortunately i dont have the Degauss feature/button so i just have to keep slapping the monitor sided to side!

I dont wanna try the magnet experiment cause i dont have the degauss and it will be days before i can get the rainbow electrons to go away!

Any other ways i can fix/reduce this, besides banging the monitor?

184869 2003-10-19 20:30:00 Most monitors degauss when you have restarted the PC, or after they've been suspended or powered down. Worth a shot looking into it...!?! Chilling_Silently (228)
184870 2003-10-19 23:04:00 Not sure if there would be anything in them to help in this situation but have a browse through Billy's Monitor FAQs - link top right of this page. Note that the FAQs may take a while to load, but they will turn up in the end. Susan B (19)
184871 2003-10-20 00:19:00 There is most likely a dry joint/bad connection in the circuitry associated with producing Green colour. There is no tweaking or settings that will correct the situation. There is also the possibility of a bad/broken conection in the video cable where it goes into the back of the monitor. They tend to get bent sharply there.

You have to decide by means of a quote/estimate (for which you may have to pay by the way) whether it is worth the cost of servicing.

If otherwise the picture is good clear and sharp with the brightness and contrast controls set near mid way, then it could be worth spending a bit to have it fixed. Only you can decide.

184872 2003-10-20 01:19:00 Our old monitor used to be like that. Started from the outside and slowly worked its way to the centre. Degausss did work by sitting next to a new monitor which had the feature while it degaussed. Each time it is turned off and back on, the stuff had returned back. We then got a new one. Monitors are not too pricey these days. $300 for 19" CRT ... $500 - 650 for a 15" Panel. nomad (3693)
