185456 2003-10-21 10:10:00 I think I read in a thread by Godfather that winzip was not needed in XP. While I have always steered away from winzip and associated condensing progs is this true and why? apologies if i am making a mistake.... olldaddy76 (2539)
185457 2003-10-21 10:15:00 Windows ME and later (but not 2000) come with something called Folder Compression, or something like that. It interoperates with archives created by WinZip, but largely because Folder Compression uses the .zip format. However, the Microsoft system AFAIK operates using a Wizard system, similar to the WinZip Wizard mode, and really offers no advanced features such as WinRAR and the latest versions of WinZip, let alone password protection (although I'm not sure about that one).

So no, you don't need WinZip on Windows XP, but the Compressed Folders (yes, I'm pretty sure that's what it's actually called) is fairly basic in terms of compression technologies.

185458 2003-10-21 10:39:00 The support for .zip in XP by default is as good as in any other zipping utility. -=JM=- (16)
