185447 2003-10-21 09:48:00 U want a DVD burner for $500. How about $250?! Its a lite-on brand, highly regarded as a CD Burner brand.

U may wanna check some reviews out, or a previous magazine review from PC World.

185448 2003-10-21 09:50:00 I saw a deal somewhere for a good DVD writer and 100 DVD-Rs for $500 a few weeks ago, but I can't track it down...

I guess you'd be looking for something that can read and write in the + and - RW formats, + and - R, and perhaps RAM too. It really does come down to you'll get what you pay for, but something like the Sony DRU510A or Asus DRW0402P/D should do the trick for your needs.

185449 2003-10-21 09:54:00 Forgot to say, one's $375, the other $379.

In my opinion, Asus and Sony are brands to be trusted, but other good ones are yes, LiteOn, and LG (can't remember the other one I was going to mention).

185450 2003-10-21 10:26:00 AOpen and Plextor are good.
Just look at those CDRWs now, at $68 for an AOpen CDRW Drive.

185451 2003-10-21 12:23:00 Get Sony DRU510A from OEMCOMPUTERS (http://www.oemcomputers.co.nz)

Its good brand and supports -/+ R formats.
It is bit expensive then the DSE one and retails for $468 but its worth it in long run and the performance it offers.

Cheers

185452 2003-10-21 22:26:00 Just another minor point. Do you have any other computers that you will want to use your DVDs in? If so, make sure that the burner you purchase will burn DVDs that are compatible with the drives in your other computers.

I didn't think of this, but fortunately I bought a dual drive - the Sony DRU510-A - that does both DVD+R and DVD-R. The first DVD I burned would not work in my laptop because I used the wrong format disk without thinking.

Just a thought...

185453 2003-10-21 23:10:00 Suggest you go for the Pioneer A06... ultimate writer... I have the Sony DRU500AX but it has problems with Princo 4X media... no such probs for the A06!

OTOH, you could wait until they release dual format, dual layer writers... each disc holds up to 8.5gig IIRC? Will make these writers obsolete very quickly. I would say another 6 months before we start seeing them.

Cheers,

Lo.

185454 2003-10-22 04:02:00 The latest LG one looks real good. Supports all the odd & standardised formats of DVD & CD.
4040B or something, Just under $500 inc GST from memory too. Can't find it on LG's site yet tho although my supplier has them listed.
