As Peter has mentioned, if do a search of this forum using "ghost" for a search term, you will find plenty of threads discussing the software :)

But in a quick summary, it is a program that can be used to clone the entire contents from one hard drive to another so that you end up with an identical copy of it. This is good when you are upgrading to a newer hard drive and rather than reinstall the OS and all the programs again, you can simply and quickly copy (clone) the original drive onto the new drive.

But its main use is to create images of your hard drive which normally includes everything currently existing on that hard drive/partition. This image is normally compressed to a smaller size and can be stored on an external storage device eg CD's (may span 2-3) or zip drive, or onto a different partition (it cannot be saved onto the same partition which was imaged (ghosted)). This image can then be used to restore the OS if it gets corrupted, and it only takes a short time to have a fully functioning OS again. If the image was stored externally or onto a separate physical hard drive, it can also be used as a backup if the hard drive suddenly bits the dust and your data is lost.

Summary - it is excellant at saving your bacon and time when good OS's go bad :D
