| 185888 | 2003-10-23 05:14:00 | Hi there, I just got my hands on a 256 MB PC133 CL3 DIMM and I've had the following results when trying it in various PCs (on its own, no other RAM installed): PC won't start PC starts but detects RAM as 32 MB PC starts but detects RAM as 128 MB As above and then blue-screens The PCs I've installed it on have all had Intel chipsets I think, and they have all had a 100 MHz memory bus. A couple of them are HP machines which I'm aware can be picky about the kind of RAM they accept, but one was just a standard Asus P2B-F mobo, 100 MHz, Intel BX chipset. My questions are: Should 133 MHz RAM work okay on 100 MHz mobos? The CAS of 3 is standard...isn't it? I gather there's a compatibility issue with some RAM and Intel chipsets? Luckily I got it from www.trademe.co.nz and the guy is happy to replace it if it's faulty. The RAM is Jetway, JM334S643A-75, 168 Pin DIMM SD-RAM 133 MHz CL3, 256 MB, single sided. Cheers for your help :) Brendan |

| 185891 | 2003-10-23 07:39:00 | You can use faster ram on a slower bus, it will just run at the bus speed you can lso use, say, pc66 ram on a 100 bus it will just run at 66. I've actually used different speeds on the same machine but if I remeber right they all ran at the slowest. Have you tried swapping it around different slots some motherboards are fussy where the first tick goes 0 or 1 or 2. Sometimes there doesn't seem to be any logic to it. If nothing works get the guy to exchange for something else or your money back. Cheers Murray P PS. I'm thinking why did they want to sell it in the first place ;) |

| 185892 | 2003-10-23 08:01:00 | i would say its faulty. sometimes you can get hp bios that restrict the amount of ram you can put in even tho the chipset can run more. a 440bx should be fine with single sided 256. if a new stick reports as 128 then you will need to get a double sided stick. cas3 @ 133mhz will be fine as most will run cas2.5 @ 100mhz. |
