185880 2003-10-23 04:40:00 If I have connected to the internet and then click on Explorer I get a message that says " The page cannot be displayed."

If I disconnect then click on Explorer the dial up box comes up and I get connected with my home page there .

If I try to surf the web then I get the " page cannot be dispalyed" and also a message that " cant find server " which is still there as the connection is still showing .

Can anyone offer advice please /

185881 2003-10-23 04:46:00 Since you can get to your ISP's home page, look there for the information you need to set up 'My Connection".

You have the wrong setting for the "DNS server".

185882 2003-10-23 04:56:00 Um, not necessarily - it's quite probably that his homepage is loading out of his browser cache.

In Internet Explorer go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections.

In there click Lan Settings and untick everything, click OK.

Also click "Settings" for you dial-up connection and make sure no tickboxes are checked, click OK.

Try again.

Otherwise we need more info, can you get e-mail, do you have a firewall, have you checked firewall config.

Also try pinging by going

Start --> Run --> Command

Type in:
ping www.novell.com

also try

ping 192.233.80.5

To see if it is a DNS problem.

If you are successfully pinging it will give the message "Reply from... " and give an IP address.

If you are NOT successfully pinging it will give the message "Request timed out".

I suggest disabling Zone Alarm and see if you are able to connect to webpages without it running. If you can then it is Zone Alarm that needs configuring.

185885 2003-10-24 06:14:00 Have disabled zone alarm and grisoft have uninstalled Mozzilla and still have no result

the only answer is to forsake microsoft and use mozilla but unfortunately ther are a couple of sites that cant be accessed by mozilla

as a last thing that may give a clue to the knowlagable the grahics no longer appear on explorer just rectangles with a symbol in the op left corne.

I wish I was a geek n but I ain't

thanks for all that contributed .

185886 2003-10-24 09:12:00 I would still suspect Zone Alarm is blocking IE even though you have disabled it.
Enable Zone Alarm again and set all security setting in ZA to low and try that.

What Windows system are you using.

185887 2003-10-24 10:23:00 Hi grums, if mozilla is working fine then it's probably not a dns or firewall issue so it's something in IE. Try clearing out your cookies, temporary internet files and history, i.e. in Internet Explorer go to tools menu/internet options:

delete cookies
deletes files
clear history

restart the computer and cross your fingers

good luck
