185624 2003-10-22 05:06:00 Have fitted a realtek network card into my machine. Windows 2000 Advanced Server picks up the card, however will not install software for it instead tells me of an error "Invalid Data"
Have had no such problem with my second machine running XP. Have swapped the card at shop thinking maybe faulty>same problem.
Any clues?
Regards Ron

185625 2003-10-22 05:28:00 This works for XP but should be ok for 2000 . . . . . . .

This error appears to be due to a protection problem in the Windows registry and can occur with a variety of drivers (sound cards and SCSI drivers have been reported) . To fix this problem, go to Start, Run . . . and type "regedit" without the quotes to run the Registry Editor .

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI
Now highlight the SYSTEM entry, and make sure that “Allow” is selected for both Full Control, and Read,

Now select the “Advanced” button, and in the “Advanced Security Settings” view, make sure that “Replace permission entries on all child objects …” IS selected, and that “Inherit from parent the permission entries …” is NOT selected,
Hit “Apply”, then “OK”, and close the various Regedit dialog windows .

Go back to Device Manager, and Select “Reinstall Drivers”, and they should install OK .

185626 2003-10-22 05:35:00 something about the protected storage. enable admin's permission to change, then you can reinstall the drivers. yang11 (170)
185627 2003-10-22 05:57:00 Hi,
thanks for that.
When I go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI", I find no "System" entry. instead there are 11 further folders named simaler to this> VEN_10DE&DEV_0253&SUBSYS_289E107D&REV_A3 each having sub folders 4&618ba55&0&0008 and Control and \Device Parameters and \LogConf. none giving me the options you sujest to change. Sorry but can you fine tune for Windows 2000?

185630 2003-10-22 09:20:00 Hi,
and thanks for that. Have gone to the page where my symptoms certainly fit the symtoms listed, however the exe"FIXIT" tool has made no difference to the problem. Can you, or anyone, direct me to the appropriate spot in the registry,or elsewhere, to manually fix the problem?
Regards Ron

185631 2003-10-22 09:47:00 when you are in regedit and have gone to here

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ENUM\P CI <<--

you will see the folder icon marked "PCI", right click on it and you should get the context options.

Left click on the "permissions" option.

This will bring up the permissions window.

"System" is the user account that you want to give full permissions to.

If you can leave an email I will send you a word doc or Pdf with tha appropriate screenshots..

185633 2003-10-22 18:28:00 Thanks again,
Your e-mail has certainly cleared some things up, however when I right-click the PCI folder I do not have the "Permission" Option, all else looks the same. Is there a setting somewhere else which will give me the "Permission" option back on the right-click menu in the registry?

Regards Ron.
