| 185915 | 2003-10-23 07:30:00 | I've had fullspeed Jetstream for over a year, and have noticed it getting ridiculously slow the past few weeks. Early morning speed is almost reasonable, (around 150 kB/s) but as the day goes on it eventually grinds to a halt ... a little while ago (8pm) I ran the nzdsl speedtest and it reported a rate of 9.2 kB/s, nearly a minute to download the 500k test data! Paradise can't figure out what the problem is and when they asked Telecom to test the line it was fine (I knew that, a dialup modem on the same line always logs on at 52k). To add insult to injury, Telecom wants $81 to come out and check the installation. The ADSL line Telecom installed has a splitter on it and the modem is an internal Speedstream 3060. XP, 2.4MHZ P4, 512MB ram. I'm tempted to go and buy a cheap (Turbocomm) modem for the same price as Telecom wants to check the line, but that may not solve the problem. Hoping someone on F1 has a clue or two... cheers, Neddy |

Strange that it gets worse as the day goes on. Some degradation is expected at peek times but that much?? Have you checked what is running on your comp plus what does your firewall and Spybot say. Sounds more like a process on your system. Cheers Murray P |

| 185918 | 2003-10-23 08:53:00 | Murray - thanks just rebooted after removing a few "unnecessaries" in my startup. Speed is now 7.2kB/s! Grrrr Don't know about any Telecom activity in the neighbourhood, but the dialup PC hasn't slowed down. Firewall (ZA 3.6) is working OK, although I'm not sure what to look for. Adaware, Spybot and AVG reports are clean. Maybe I should try reseating the modem card? cheers |

Grrrr You are doing JetStart (Jet Stream Starter) speed :D :p at the moment I am( on a JetStart (Jet Stream Starter) uploading a 5.24 MB MB file to a NZ server and I am doing 14.16 KB/s |

| 185920 | 2003-10-23 10:21:00 | I would be telling them on the phone that the problem is at their end and they are not living up to their end of the bargain by providing you with at least 2Mbit/s speed. I would probably just pay the $81 and if it really is their problem then they should refun you the money. Did you say your isp is paradise? They are having problems at the moment for some reason. I found on my JetStart connection a week ago that the speed grinded to a halt, and then stopped completely for an hour. That seems to happen about once a week ~. Heres one way to tell if the ISP is at fault, or its something else. Log into the jetstream games realm with your modem, and try downloading some big files off ftp://jetstreamgames.co.nz, with your favourite ftp program. Check the speed out. If its crawling on there too, then its a telco problem or something majorly wrong with your pc, otherwise if it goes real fast, then its paradise's problem and I would have a moan at them, and tell them about the evidence you have found :). |

| 185921 | 2003-10-23 10:29:00 | Haven't had any problems with Paradise in the Hutt Valley. Usually get between 12-18kbs on jetstart. Have a look at your firewall log. May be in the ZA folders or in documents and seetings somewhere. Is there any other aspect of the computer slowing as the day goes on. There was a thread about that not so long ago (computer slowing) but I think it was Nortons and windows not getting along. Are you in an area of fairly rapid growth or a newish suburb? | 185922 | 2003-10-23 23:54:00 | PoWa & Murray - thanks Can't see anything unusual in ZA - but I don't really know what to look for. PC is working normally in all other regards - used primarily for AutoCAD. Living in a long established area in Auckland, but of course the disease of people subdividing and building on the back of existing sections is not unknown here. Got a slow response from the jetstream games site (32kB/s) using IE (don't have FTP program, never go to ftp sites) so I guess that lets Paradise of the hook and the problem is either here or with Telecom. (Telecom will not charge $81 if the fault is theirs). I think I'll try installing the modem in another machine - that should tell me if the PC is at fault at least. cheers |
