186388 2003-10-25 01:32:00 I have just added a second HDD (Seagate Barracuda V 120 GB) to a P4 machine running XP Home. The BIOS recognises the drive during the self test phase, but XP is ignoring it.
What do I do?

186389 2003-10-25 02:19:00 How do you know that Win XP is "ignoring" it? Isn't it showing up at all in Disk Management? Have the jumpers been set to the correct positions? Fire-and-Ice (3910)
186390 2003-10-25 02:20:00 Windows won't recognise it unless it is partitioned and formatted. Graham L (2)

True, but it should still show in Disk Management so the job can be done in there.

186392 2003-10-25 04:59:00 Just what they said make sure your jumpers are correct in the disk is formatted and partitioned to NTFS could help.

Otherwise it is just Windows being a BiArch And only bying the latest version of Windows can help you.;-)

186393 2003-10-25 18:38:00 Got it guys - Drive wasn't partitioned or formatted - it now has two partitions and is busy formatting them.

Last time I had to do this I used fdisk and format c:/s

Expected that XP would have more "smarts" than it does to tell me what was wrong. Still, I have now been introduced to the delights of the "manage" function in XP.

Many thanks to all.

186394 2003-10-26 01:49:00 Drive is now partitioned and formatted.

XP Disk Management showes a Healthy (System) NTFS C: drive, and also shows two Healthy NTFS drives E: and F:

In a DOS Box I can copy files from C: to E: and F:, from E: to F: and vice versa.

I have rebooted a number of times, but Explorer / My Computer still ignores the new logical drives and doesn't show they exist.

Any ideas?

186395 2003-10-26 01:52:00 View> Refresh ? It's got to be something stupidly simple lioke that. Graham L (2)
186396 2003-10-26 02:45:00 Do you have Tweak UI installed? There is option in this to show or hide drives. Fooled me when I added an extra HD.
Bye

186397 2003-10-26 05:07:00 You were right!
View / Refresh did nothing

But I installed Powertoys for XP which has TweakUI in it, ticked E: and F: as being available (the programme already new they were there, as did the Disk Management applet) and hey presto - Explorer now recognises them.

Many thanks.
