186424 2003-10-25 00:28:00 My computer tower has recently started to emit a howling siren type of sound whenever my son has tried to play any game and also when ever an virus scan runs, and on odd occasions just whenever it feels like it. Resorces are running up at over 65% at these times so I don't believe it is that. But I'm at a loss to know what is causing it .... any ideas will be gratefully recieved :)

186425 2003-10-25 00:32:00 Does this only occur when playing games? Does it happen when he turns the volume up for the speakers? On cause might be that the microphrone (if you have one) is turned on and you are getting some feedback through the system.

Another cause might be some corrupt sound drivers, you could prosibly check this by unistalling your sound card drivers and then re-install them again.

Thats about all I can think of with the information given, what OS, does it do it for all games and what sound and video card are you using, this information may help others identify your problem.

186426 2003-10-25 00:58:00 A siren-type sound is often the default warning of a CPU over-temperature alarm.

You need to have this checked out, you may have a defective CPU fan, or the heat-sink may be dislodged.

An overheating CPU can cause failure, and expen$e

186427 2003-10-25 07:23:00 Sorry guys ... OS is Win ME .... yea yea i know ick lol....

Its only doing the howling for four or five games so far ... and tghe moment the game is closed the howl stops, so I don't think it is a heat problem either, as the puter can go for hours with no hassles or it can be recently booted up and a game started when the howl begins, only to stop once the game is terminated, and run sweetly all nite.

Also its definatly from the tower and not the speakers.

186428 2003-10-25 07:27:00 Sure its not from the monitor?

It is in some cases possible to force an unsupoted setting on a monitor from in-game,setting the refresh rate too high will cause it to emit a very high screech.

186429 2003-10-25 08:43:00 Yes, it sounds as if it would be a warning signal from the BIOS (or something) that a fan speed has dropped, or a temperature is too high. agent (30)
186430 2003-10-25 11:45:00 That is enitrly possible. When you play games or nortons runs its virus scan you put the CPU under a lot more load this could be causing it to over heat and cool off just as quickly when you close the games down (shoulda thought of this myself) <slaps self in face for being dumb> :D

I'd check your CPU fan and Heatsink and clean out any dust that may have gathered inside the case.
