185984 2003-10-23 19:09:00 I scanned some text using HP director, saved it as a Word doc in rtf format and emailed to an associate as an attachment. I received the following reply

There is something very wrong with either your mail or the attachment in particular.
I opened the attachemnt Tues night & it caused MS Office XP to detect 'significant change in machine configuration', & the message instructed reload of XP. I did this and everything seemed to be OK.
Tonight ***** reading email and opened again & got same message so just about to go thru the 60 - 90 min routine again.
A bit too wierd for my liking....
Will check for likely causes on internet once back to gethter

any ideas?

185985 2003-10-23 21:33:00 Are you running an up to date anti virus program? Fire-and-Ice (3910)
185986 2003-10-24 03:28:00 Yes

My anti virus software (Norton) and firewall software (ZoneAlarm Pro) are up to date. I am running my pc through a Nokia M1122 router which seems to do pretty good job as a firewall as it seems to block most things.

Norton is scanning incoming and outgoing emails and all documents as they open.

My pc is a little unstable since loading Dragon Naturally Speaking version 7.

My pc is 2 months old with a fast processor and 1 GB of Ram.

That's beside the point... is your friend running an up-to-date virus scanner?

Do you have any problems reading the RTF file? Have you tried opening it on another machine (apart from your friend's)? I doubt the RTF file is to blame - it sounds more like other issues on your friend's computer.

Why would that be? Surely a virus could somehow attach itself to the file he is sending and infect his friend's computer if there was no up to date anti virus program installed?

is your friend

That would be most desirable as well. ;-)

185990 2003-10-24 22:23:00 I believe so. nick01 (4767)
185991 2003-10-24 22:25:00 The RTF file opens fine on my pc running XP and on my old machine running on the second release of Windows 98 nick01 (4767)
185992 2003-10-24 22:32:00 I scanned to Word 2000 using the IRIS OCR software bundled with my HP 3570 scanner.

I can't see how that would (should) have been a problem.
