186263 2003-10-27 05:44:00 I know we had an issue at one stage where it did show the email address of the poster, but that was ages ago.
Thing is this: How hard should I have to work to give people prizes? If I can't contact a winner, I move on to another winner. Simple. I guess you have to consider the cost (being potential spam traffic) against the benefit (of possibly winning something). It's up to you, really. I suppose it doesn't bother me much either way. Like I say, if you can't reply to a message asking for a delivery address, we just ask someone else for theirs.

186264 2003-10-27 05:48:00 Yeah, I think there's a bit of looking a gift horse in the mouth going on. Greg S (201)
186265 2003-10-27 05:55:00 Just make sure you include something catchy in the subject line that relates to PressF1. Because some junk mails contain "Your a winner" in the subject line, so nobody reads them and they just get deleted ;)

How do you select the winners anyway? By a draw? I reckon it should be done on a count of usefulness, ie Godfather has just reached 5000+ posts and should have a prize on that merit alone. ~ ~

186266 2003-10-27 06:07:00 I understand it'd be hard, which is why you are asking people to change their email address now to the correct one, but surely these people had reasons for this, maybe the same paranoia we all live in?

I am glad PressF1 didn't make me respond to a confirmation page to activate my account, or did they? Because it would have been the last of me, I thought being able to post freely was good, this login idea gave me a month or so to think about it before I came back (computers is my life, so why not share the wonders of it)

I'm not here for the prizes, I actually enjoy sharing what I know with others, and being corrected and learning, thankful for the PressF1 CD Case I won last year though, does give some reputation I guess but over time, it kinda dies down.

186267 2003-10-27 06:46:00 Well. If it is an invalid email address first of all the pressf1 folks won't be able to get in touch with you *hint hint*. Second of all, if you happen to select to have email alerts sent on new messages to a thread.. Bruce will get mighty annoyed and bounced mail in his account.

On the internet there are no guarantees of course, but I'm sure you'll find that IDG do their best to keep email addresses secure.

186268 2003-10-27 07:05:00 Kame - it's possible you're contravening an agreement when you joined PF1 by not providing a valid address in the first place. But anyway, what's wrong with creating a disposable address from Yahoo or somewhere and get over it? Greg S (201)
186269 2003-10-27 07:25:00 Well I have my personal home email addy in my profile (hidden of course :D), never had any unrequested communications from IDG or their sponsers to date.I don't consider the possibility of *something nice* to be unrequested.
Just thought I'd better clarify that point :p
I could always put on one of my web-based emails, but have never been worried about IDG's intentions.Actually, if I give you a couple more valid email addys will this increase my chance of *whatever* :D

186271 2003-10-27 19:56:00 Email addresses in your profiles are not sold or distributed in any way to third parties.

The privacy policy that is on the sign-up page:

"The information you provide here is used by IDG Communications Ltd to identify the demographics of our audience for editorial purposes. Personal Information will not be provided to third parties. At IDG Communications Ltd we respect your privacy. Please click here (idg.net.nz) to see our complete privacy statement "

Please note that the email newsletters we run - Top News, Virus Watch etc - are not the same as signing up for PressF1. When you sign up for PressF1 there is no box to tick saying you don't want to recieve third party emails. This is because we don't send any to PressF1 users, end of story.

As long as you choose the option to have your email address hidden from view (it never displays on a page here), it can't be harvested by spambots.

Having a valid email address in your profile so that we (the humans) and PressF1 (the software) can contact you means you can be notified of prizes, have me rant at you if you're being a naughty PressF1er, and receive thread notifications etc.

The choice is entirely yours.
