186024 2003-10-25 00:47:00 Stayed up 1/2 the night & had success of sorts.
I managed to assign an IP address to the RedHat9 box & create some shared folders on it & could access the RedHat Box from XP Pro with usernames & passwords, Cool.
Cranked them both up this morning & couldn't log on to the shared folders anymore.
All other machines on the network are visible so I don't quite know what's gone wrong.
Can ping the Linux box but that's all.
I was going to install LinNeighbourhood to help me get access to the doze boxes on the network from RedHat but when I went to download it the rpms seemed to be for Mandrake Is there an rpm for Redhat?

Any help would be great, seems a bit of a mission but I'm not giving up till I've got it working properly.
Thanks

186025 2003-10-25 01:50:00 Went back over the steps I took to get the sharing working & realised I hadn't actually started Samba when I booted the Linux box this morning.
I thought it would automatically start.
How do you get apache & samba to start with the machine? I can't find a startup folder anywhere
Thanks

Take a look under KMenu > System Settings > Server Settings > Services (Service Managment) which will pop up the Services Configuration menu. Make sure you have them running in the required runlevels for your needs.

Thanks Jen C
Works great
Don't know anything about LinNeighborhood do you? I'd like to see the other machines on my network from ReHat
Thanks again

Yeah, it is good for disabling un-necessary services which improves bootup and general performance. :D

I only run Samba which does what I need for my network of 2 PC's (XP and Red Hat 9). I had heard that LinNeighorhood is good, so someone else might be able to point you in the right direction :)

186029 2003-10-25 10:18:00 Ahh... redhat-config-services is a wonderful thing.. ;-)

Try doing a man on smbmount.. could prove interesting (Ive had better results with Samba 3.xx than smb2).

Ive used LinNeighbourhood and found it quite good, however being a GNOME 2.4 user, I'd rather just use Nautilus to browse the shares.

If you're keen to play with services from the command line, then look at the manpage for chkconfig :-)

Cheers
