186364 2003-10-24 23:47:00 just in case you haven't install your mandrake 9.2 yet, Mandrake released news that their Mandrake 9.2 may kill LG-cdroms regardless its a cdrom or network install. yang11 (170)

186366 2003-10-25 05:10:00 I've just been following it here (www.mandrakeclub.com). bmason (508)
186367 2003-10-25 05:38:00 And www.mandrakelinux.com

The current theory is its related to the packet writing support and possibly buggy firmware in the drive because an update from the LG site has prevented the problem for some drives.

186368 2003-10-25 06:01:00 Nuts, I just bought Mandrake 9.2

What is an LG thing?

I have an old computer.

Acutally, here is a hardware report on it.

Will that get fried if I install 9.2 on?

I just bought 9.2 the other day, for the sole purpose of loading it onto that old computer, so I could finally try it out.

But maybe not?

The problem is with the brand of LG Electronic CD-Drives (www.lgeus.com)

Unlikely as it seems that PC doesn't even have a CD-ROM drive installed - only a floppy and hard drive.
Drive -Drive Type
A: Removable Disk
C: Local Disk

If you will be swapping another optical drive from a different machine into that one for the installation, just make sure it is not the LG Brand.

186370 2003-10-25 23:19:00 Ok, well I have some unknown one, and an HP cd writer.

I guess I will use the HP one to be safe.

I didnt know LG was a brand, I thought it could be a certain type of cd drive.

Thanks

186371 2003-10-26 01:33:00 LG is "Lucky Goldstar". No wonder they changed it. :D Graham L (2)
186372 2003-10-26 06:17:00 Just an upadate: The problem seems to be at LG's end rather than mandrake (IMO atleast).

In the affected models they decided to use the FLUSH_CACHE command for uploading new firmware so when the kernel boots it trashes the firmware.

186373 2003-10-26 19:04:00 Does it affect LG cd burners???
If so, can I safely put my LG burner back in the system after installation??
Thanks
