186086 2003-10-24 02:20:00 hi,new pc
2ghz xp +
40gb
256mb (ddr ?)
XP pro
soltek mobo.

im getting 100% cpu peaks at regular intervals, bout 10seconds apart, from system idle process
(while i do nothing with a few browsers open, but with only task manager selected.

it did this once for a few hours when i first got it a week ago,and its just doing it now

it was annoying cos while at 100% i cudnt type,it took 3seconds to appear.

what is the cause?
virus, trojan evil files? something odd with win xp pro ???

i was just going to take a screenshot of the task manager graph, but its stopped doing it for now! argh silly :P

thanks

186087 2003-10-24 03:13:00 It could be Windows XP's Indexing Service that is supposed to run when the computer is idle.

Turn the damn thing off, you don't need it. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Services and Applications > Services, right click on Indexing Service > Properties then Disable under Startup Type.

If that does not fix it let us know. :-)

186088 2003-10-24 03:23:00 S'cuse me if im Hijacking this thread, but what exactly does this Indexing service do?

Searching the HDD is still slow as ever...!

186089 2003-10-24 03:25:00 It makes your computer run slower so you will believe Intel and Microsoft when they say you need a faster computer and to pay them more dollars. :D What else is the software for? Graham L (2)
186090 2003-10-24 07:20:00 The Xp search engine is apparently very slow the 98 one is much faster kiwibeat (304)

but its the same, and before i clicked 'disable' it said 'currently NOT on'

ALSO if i drag my IE window continously, the cpu goes to 100% until i stop doing it also,(just to help things)

i downloaded the program that shows graphs .

everytime 100% cpu = it says 'msgs' MSN EVIL
i knew it

i hated it when msn 2 . 2 wudnt run anymore, evil microsoft . and trillian is blocked now,so im not sure what im gona do .

ive now exited MSN messenger .

i have left the pc for a few minutes with just this window sitting here . . . no more 100% peaks . . . . EVIL MSN :O
(well windows messenger infact)

i wonder why it was that .

i think that i should just use linux! haha
i still get 100% cpu when i drag IE window around . .
thanks ppl
