| 185968 | 2003-10-23 13:02:00 | Ive finally signed up for JetStream Starter and have a Router on the way... Im going to be running my setup something like this: ------- Router -------- | | | ------- My PC ------- | | | ------- Switch ------- | | | ------ Family's PC and other PC's I throw on the LAN My PC is currently running Slackware 9.1 with Squid 2.5 and VSFTPD 1.2.1. Im wanting to try and limit to some degree the way the rest of the network can download. The rest of the family understand Im doing this, and my reasons why, and arent complaining, seeing as im paying for ADSL. Is it possible to throttle certain ports, or traffic to certain IP's (like the family PC's IP), or just limit the over-all amount that's able to be downloaded by each user? Im sure there's a MySQL Plugin (Which I might have on this box... I did a complete install) for Squid which can limit data, but the thing is that use of the Proxy ATM is optional... So how would I set my PC to route ALL traffic through the proxy first if I went with the MySQL plugin? Many thanks A very eager Chill. |

And that I'm going to be putting Linux on and throwing in one of the younger sibblings room for them to do their homework/surfing on. The question still remains though: Even if i use linux on an old box, how can I restrict speed/download amounts to a certain user/IP? |

| 185974 | 2003-10-24 06:08:00 | Good to see you've jumped on the adsl bandwaggon there Chill, but I'm betting you'll be kicking yourself in a few months time when you want to fork out extra money for woosh ;) What router did you opt for in the end? With my RTA300 router, I don't have to worry about the other people on the lan stealing all the bandwidth, because it give high priority to my P2P traffic ]:) :D. Besides if they are only surfing a few webpages, then there is practically no slowdown because they are only requesting small amounts of data in short bursts. Just make sure they don't start downloading stuff with kazaa and you should be fine. |
