1326262 2013-02-03 20:56:00 Well good on them for telling the US investigators to shove off, unfortunately for NZ I think too much is at stake for us as a country to start creating political feuds. I'm not certain on the facts, but from what I understand the GCSB & Police were mislead and given false information. So, on those grounds the requests the US Authorities made were probably perfectly reasonable given the information supplied. The Error Guy (14052)
1326263 2013-02-03 22:55:00 Iceland has a proud history of telling big powers to naff off. As they did to Britain when it was trying to bully them into letting them steal cod out of Iceland's waters. There are some amazing films on YouTube of the so-called 'Cod Wars'. The attitude of the Heath government to the Icelandic parliamentarians was disgusting - part of one of the YouTube documentaries recounts how Heath et al treated them when they came to Britain for talks. Somehow Heath seemed to think the Brits had a divine right to dominate Iceland. John H (8)

Actually, I don't think there is anything at stake. The Aussies have sucked up to the US for years and have still not got any good access to the US market.
Antigua WON their case at the WTO and still got nowhere so I don't think is a dog's show of getting our primary produce into the US on any decent terms.

1326266 2013-02-04 07:54:00 By at stake I mean we don't have to suck up like the Aussies, although we don't have any great trade deals with America (our trade is to Asia mostly), we don't have an particularly bad ones either. No sense in unnecessarily getting the grudge on our name. The Error Guy (14052)

That's the common sense approach. Still, I applaud what the Icelandic Government has done.
I was there a couple of weeks ago,a most interesting place and safe as houses (notwithstanding volcanoes etc. Hey! just like home). I know they made some atrocious economic decisions a few years back, and are now paying for it and in a quirky kind of way, that's raised their international profile, which has made visiting there more popular.
The people do seem on the whole, quite sensible and friendly - which could be a typical Scandinavian trait.

I'd like to visit the 'outer reaches' of Europe some time, of course I'm interested in seeing all the mainstream stuff around central Europe, but I'd also love to get out into the not so traveled areas. The outback of Russia also seems interesting. Would be awesome to trekk down through Russia throug h Khazak/Uzbekistan and into Mongolia through to China. Top of China is very interesting. s

I know, there's so much to see. We've reached a fortunate stage where we can do a bit of travelling and with family living here in England we come here every year or two. It's a convenient base to visit Europe and this time our focus was planned on seeing Iceland (done) and Tallinn in Estonia (watching weather for it to warm up a bit before we attempt it).
