1326124 2013-02-02 06:10:00 While the so called "experts" are going in circles trying to fix the Novapay system, would it be too simple to issue each school with a cheque book? Any discrepancies could be cleared up later. At this rate the teachers will strike and the schools will close.

I sometimes think that self styled "experts" are as thick as two planks; can't think outside the square!

1326125 2013-02-02 06:42:00 The problem is with these new fangled computers. When I worked for the English Electric group, there were some 220,000 employees, well over twice the number of teachers, just a small firm, they used to have wages departments. We were always paid on time.

Before that 1960-63 I used to lecture part time one evening a week, (or was it two) at the then Birmingham College of Advanced Technology and there was never any problem with pay, and there would have been thousands of teachers in the Birmingham area on the city pay roll, never any problems with pay or tax deductions etc.

So what is up with these Aussie con-artists who can't make up a few pay packets correctly when equipped with all the latest wizz-bang systems?

1326126 2013-02-02 06:43:00 Yes the software is a total mess. At first they said there was nothing wrong with in - user input my arse.

Heard on the radio on Friday, ( this is how it was described) the govt were told even before it was introduced it was full of errors /faults, but the company supplying the software wanted more money to fix THEIR programming faults and the govt refused to pay.

Remember the schools *are* paying the teachers first, then getting reimbursed by the Ministry later.

I'm not trying to defend Talent2 here, but you do need to be careful about media reports blowing things up and skewing the real issues. Just because there were 147 defects doesn't necessarily mean it shouldn't have gone live - what matters is how many of those were P1 or P2 defects, which based on the media coverage to date it sounds like there weren't any P1s but perhaps 10 P2s, and what the nature of the defects were (ref: computerworld.co.nz). Plenty of IT projects go-live despite outstanding defects - it's sometimes not worth delaying a project go-live because of a few minor issues that can be fixed after launch, but the key thing is to understand what the defects are and what the implications are of not resolving them before the go/no-go decision is made. People who actually understand the defects and what implications they have need to be part of that go/no-go decision.

It seems there were more fundamental issues with this project (Talent2 promised to deliver something for a certain price that they simply couldn't do) that ultimately caused the problems, and not necessarily the number of software defects.

Disclaimer: I did not work on Novopay, and do not know anyone who has worked on Novopay, or is involved in any way with the system.

Hah.
Did you see their "interview" with themselves telling each other how great they are?
They stuffed up, then threaten NZ.

The ministry then sack some victim who they decide is high enough up to be noticed but not high enough to be themselves. A scapegoat.
And then pay Talent2 and go ahead.

Imagine a tradesman doing such a thing, they'd be all over Fair Go.

I screw up your PC repair then tell you I want more money to fix it before I give it back. And then give it back with more problems.
Right.

As for projects live with errors, so, there are lots of screwup companies doing half ass work and they get away with it cause no-one does anything about it.
It's accepted.

Watch this space, wait for IRDs new system.

That mess reminds me exactly of what happened when I made the mistake of working for Telstra in their fix problems dept. It was incredible, well actually, maybe not, seems to be a thing with Aussie companies..... Ignore the screwup, blame everyone else, sack a few people who don't matter and keep bullshitting.
Enough sheep will go along with it that they ultimately get away with it.

Take note - that company in Belgium. You think they'll change because of that prank those guys did?

What would make them pay attention is mass leaving by customers.

Teachers can't do that I guess, but the Govt should stop sniping at each other and get some balls and tell Talent 2 to naff off.

1326130 2013-02-02 07:16:00 Good points PCtek, if it was ministers pay it would have been fixed yesterday.

Yes a tradesman wouldn't get away with it but Dr's, Dentists and such do get away with it

1326131 2013-02-02 07:30:00 Novopay is the best argument for the bulk funding of schools I have seen. tutaenui (1724)
1326132 2013-02-02 07:57:00 Its only news because most teachers are left wing labor and green voting *****. If there was a commie government in power you would have heard bugger all. Some of the mistakes are over payments which not a problem anyway. prefect (6291)
1326133 2013-02-02 08:28:00 time to move on and spend the money somewhere else, this is beyond a joke Gobe1 (6290)
