1325470 2013-01-29 09:25:00 Came home monday aft to find the cat on the deck with a bad
cut on his back leg. Our usual vet was closed so had to go to the after hours vet in Manukau.
The cat needed stitches which meant a general anaesthetic and an
over night stay. Must pick up before 8am next day because they close.
Had to pay $800 monday night and on pick up $372.
Now looking at the invoice (17 items) :- sTERILE SURGERY FEE
20 Minutes $306.70, small bandage $35.80, IV fLUID $ 180.
Just a sample and I appreciate the service out of hours but
I think someone is taking advantage of owners that want to do the
right thing for their beloved pets.

1325471 2013-01-29 09:39:00 After Hours Vets charges can be excessive sometimes, and looking at the ones posted, it does seem a bit over the top.

Our dog has had 3 operations when she was a puppy over two years, eating things she shouldn't have gotten stuck in her gut and needed to be cut open to have them removed BUT looking at your charges, ours looks light - it cost us in round figures $1000 each time. Thankfully shes grown out of it now.

1325472 2013-01-29 09:45:00 Nearly $1200 for pet surgery? That's a helluva lot of money! The Error Guy (14052)
1325473 2013-01-29 18:38:00 Don't know if it is still the case but not so long ago they were having trouble recruiting new veterinarians to rural practices

Most want to be set up in a 9.00 to 5.00 urban environment catering to the family pet

1325474 2013-01-29 18:56:00 Vets are cheap compared to hospitals, but most people don't realise the cost because hospitals are funded.
Vets are not.

You can get pet insurance, there's a few companies offering this, and it saves you money when these things happen.

As with people health insurance it's roughly 80% you get back.

1325475 2013-01-29 19:07:00 Yes these bills really hurt.
But when it comes to pets most people seem prepared to pay whatever.

I do know that the vets course at varsity is just about the longest there is.

But I do ten to think that Professional fees have got way out of whack with workers wages.

Lawyers, doctors, accountants, vets, pc technicians, they are all about or over $100 an hour.

Yet the average guy who drives a bus or a digger, or a forklift only gets $13 to $20 an hour.

And don't get me started on consultants

1325476 2013-01-29 19:16:00 I know that it costs me $100+ to take my cat to the vet each year. My six monthly medical check costs me $40. There are no Government subsidies for pets unfortunately. Bobh (5192)

That does seem OT but the after hours guys really slug it to you. Invariably they'll usually opt for an overnight stay "for observation" and then attach various diagnostic procedures as well. Fortunately the vet I use makes himself available to his long term customers but at a premium. Fair enough though and I'm happy with that arrangement.

1325479 2013-01-29 22:44:00 I spent $500 on my dogs leg that needed its muscle fixed because it was torn quite bad. Seems a bit excessive these costs though. Next time that anything needs to be done it will be a one way trip. QW. (15883)
