| 1325422 | 2013-01-28 23:00:00 | We were having a lovely day at a beach in Kawhia Harbour, watching the people launching their boats or hauling them out. We had parked our motorhome on a small stretch of grass between the road and the sea wall. We decided that it was that nice that we would have our tea there so I got out the barbeque and started to set it up when we were approached by a maori woman wearing a maori warden's hat. She told us that we were on maori land and that we would have to leave. She said that the land belonged to the people in the house across the road. I said to her that we were on public land and she said that most people believe that it is public land, but it is not. I thought that the land might be what is referred to as "The Queen's Chain" which is public land 22 metres (approx) from the sea wall, but as that does not necessarily apply to all coastal land I could not argue that point. The reason that I refer to this as reverse racism is that there was a family of moaris in another motorhome nearby, and on the same stretch of land, but she did not ask them to move on. So we left with a very poor opinion of the moaris in Kawhia. We certainly won't return there, but then perhaps that was what they wanted. |

But several problems surround its use. At no stage has New Zealand law established that the public has full rights of access to, or use of, land alongside all our rivers, lakes and sea shores.... www.netlaw.co.nz |

It's quite possible it was private land that wasn't obvious, and a large portion of the township is on Moari land. The properties there are a mixture of leasehold and freehold. Like a lot of coastal towns though they do have a no camping rule to prevent people camping on the side of the road etc, it's possible they thought you were setting up for the night or something. There are not a lot of places in town that match your description and I can't think of any public grassy areas large enough to park a campervan on except for one small area that is all batches and the bit by the Marae. Still it's unfortunate, I'm sure you weren't hurting anybody or damaging anything and would have moved along soon enough. One little nitpick from me, I personally don't believe there is any such thing as "reverse" racism and in fact consider the term itself to be racist. Racism is racism plain and simple, no one group has exclusive rights to it. |

I'm sick of some Maori who seem to think we owe them something (not all of them are like that though, thankfully). | goodiesguy (15316) | ||

Notice I said "Not all maori's are like that, thankfully"?? Is it really that hard to read? And what would happen if someone made a generalization about white people? :groan: |

| 1325430 | 2013-01-29 00:10:00 | That's why I said it was a reminder. And generalisations about "white people" are also unwelcome. Is it so hard to understand that stereotyping is off-topic? | Zara Baxter (16260) | ||
