| 1325452 | 2013-01-29 05:48:00 | What on earth is Self Determination? Sounds like a wishy washy bit of pseudo legislation. I though Maori Wardens were like a shadow arm to the Police, stepping in with regard to Maori 'issues' before they escalated to justifying Police attention. Someone who is an elder, and more likely to get some respect than some abuse for asking someone to move along or behave themselves. |

Yup - they are unpaid volunteers, although operating without the teeth of formal legislative authority or umbrella of police protection other than civil matters. The term I used was "an agent of social control" - supported by (and welcomed by) the police. Years ago I remember accompanying a respected elder, a Ngapuhi princess, to a brawl at the Kawakawa pub. That's the Northland town with the railway running through its main street. The public bar was in full swing, probably about 40 - 50 "patrons" in 6:00pm closing times. She made her entrance and stood in the doorway, still not uttering a sound. Within a minute of her arrival, the brawl had stopped. She pointed to individual troublemakers, and they in turn made their exit. The elder system can still work. (My involvement in this anecdote? This lady was a taxi owner/operator and I - a teenager - was riding shotgun for her, as required by law then.) ;) |

There is no such thing as reverse racism beause racism is not specific to one race, in your situation, it appears you were discriminated on for being non-maori. 2. If maori wardens are there to police maoris, then they had no authority to tell you to do anything as you are not maori. 3. The whole existance of maori wardens is racist, they should be disbanded. |
