1325714 2013-01-30 23:38:00 Well it seems the problem wasn't actually downloading the song, but rather reseeding it. So the lesson is to be a leech and not a seeder.

Poor sucker probably didn't even know she was seeding :p

1325715 2013-01-31 01:25:00 Agreed it's not the "biggest" deterrent, but it's one that somebody could *actually* pay off as mentioned, rather than those "no hope of ever paying off in a lifetime" ones the US try to give out.

There's a ton of ways around the new law:
1) Download from a public file-sharing service, such as megaupload (See what I did there!)
2) Download via Usent
3) Download via a Seedbox not in this country
4) Download via a proxy / VPN service

So yeah it really is, and always has been, about stopping the casual "opportunist" from doing it. They're fighting a losing battle if they think they'll track down every tom, dick and harry who are using Usenet :p

1325717 2013-01-31 01:36:00 It's been a while since I read the exact wording of the act, plod, but my understanding is that it is for accessing copyrighted material - so downloading, rather than filesharing.

(I should go double-check that, eh.)

1325718 2013-01-31 01:42:00 This person got fined $600 for downloading 3 songs. Kimdotcom is seeking taxpayers reaparations for making millions infringing the intellectual property of all sorts of artists.

Figures.

1325719 2013-01-31 01:48:00 And following up my own post:

It's infringing if...
"material is uploaded via, or downloaded from, the Internet using an application or network that enables the simultaneous sharing of material between multiple users; and
(b)uploading and downloading may, but need not, occur at the same time"

So you could just be downloading, or uploading. Not clear in this case without reading the judgement, which ... I have lying around here somewhere, but no time to read right now in detail.

So using an app like soulseek is 'safe' chill? I mean they cannot be monitored? How does that work?
Sanco (683)
1325721 2013-01-31 02:23:00 No, using SoulSeek is a bad idea and you'll likely get caught. That said I know they've mostly been focusing on torrenting users so far, but I wouldn't personally push my luck. Chilling_Silence (9)
