1348827 2013-07-14 06:20:00 Hi guys,

I have an old hard drive which is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 80GB, which is used with XP on it. I want to add it to my new windows 7 PC with a H77-WIFI board, I have got all the cables for it, and no idea what to do next, please help.

Thanks!

1348828 2013-07-14 06:26:00 Does the board have a IDE/PATA connector or do you have a IDE to SATA converter? Jen (38)
1348829 2013-07-14 06:32:00 The Hard drive is SATA I am pretty sure darkoverlord123 (16996)
1348830 2013-07-14 06:51:00 Ah, it is too. I just assume from 'old' and the small size it was IDE/PATA. Are you trying to dual boot XP/Win7 or just want the 80gig drive for storage? Jen (38)
1348831 2013-07-14 07:10:00 If you want to use windows off it you can't. If you just want it for storage just plug it in and away you go pretty much.
80G is pretty small these days, sure it's worth the effort?

1348832 2013-07-14 07:47:00 Yeah its fine, i just need about 10gb, and just storage, and please explain, do i just plug it in and turn my pc on? darkoverlord123 (16996)
1348833 2013-07-14 08:26:00 do i just plug it in and turn my pc on?

yes

Bolt the drive in, if you have the space leave a gap between it and the existing drive so they won't heat each other up too much
Pick a spare sata port, connect a cable from it to the hard drive. make sure to connect a power cable also. Boot up, done. If you want to wipe the drive the quickest way is to format it, just be sure you pick the right one and don't want anything off it :)

1348834 2013-07-14 23:45:00 How do you format it? Haha BIOS or just on windows? Thanks! darkoverlord123 (16996)
1348835 2013-07-15 00:32:00 You can right click "computer" after pressing the start button and select "Manage". Click Disk Management I think and down the list it should list your new HD. Right click unallocated or something, choose New Simple Volume, then choose the size you want and it should go thru the process of formatting it for you.... Nomad (952)
1348836 2013-07-15 03:41:00 No need for such things Nomad. That would be true for a new unpartitioned drive, but this an old drive with data on it.

Open my computer, right click the drive (making sure it's the right one), choose format - quick format is ok and change the volume name if you want.

If you are in doubt as to drive letters because your existing drive has more than one partition go to disk management as per nomads post above - you should be able to see what drive letters belong to what physical drive by looking carefully at the list. (Just don't try to format C: :) - won't work anyway)
