1325137 2013-01-27 18:10:00 Here. (www.nzherald.co.nz)
I don't know what Greg Murphy is on about when he says "We have an incredibly old fleet of cars on the road and we are now putting the responsibility squarely on the motorist to ensure that they get their vehicles safe." Greg, cars older than 13 years still need a 6 months WOF check. Sounds like he is calling a car newer than 13 years old.

1325138 2013-01-27 18:25:00 Much as I like saving money
I think they should have kept it as it is.
Many New Zealanders do not maintain their cars and some people relied on the WOF checks to point things out.

And yes when does a car stop being "new" and become "old"
Mileage also comes into it.
And I tend to think that allowing Jap imports has made our "fleet" much newer.

The funny thing about this change was that there was no demand for it.
Yet the public has demand lots of other things and the government does nothing

1325139 2013-01-27 19:03:00 My cars have always been at least 19 years old, the oldest was 36 - a Classic.
None of them have required repairs picked up by a WOF.

They have needed things - clutch, gearbox, and so on, not a WOF thing.

One needed a CV joint, but I told the mechanic, not the other way round, then he said it could be left until worse. When worse I booked it in.

And they are bleating about the younger than 13yr old cars anyway, why? Cause they're loosing their little money maker.

I bet fails on older than 13 will increase considerably now so they can get their money back.
Heaps of them, inc VTNZ, lie now.

And you can bet that the price of your annual WOF check will rise dramaticaly.

1325141 2013-01-27 19:56:00 My car is a 1995 Honda Civic EXI passes the warrant every time. Mind you it has only done 52,000Ks. The only thing I have replaced is the tyres because I got sick of them tilling me my tyres need replacing soon.

Agree . It's the Govt's responsibility to control it .

It's pointless to set a rule without a means of controlling it . That shows how silly and useless our politicians are .

They are only interested in debating those 'unnecessary' issues like gay marriages, drinking age, smacking law, etc .

1325143 2013-01-27 20:13:00 Yay, annual warrant now.

Just wondering, if you custom built a car, what warrant requirement does that come under? New as in date of first registration/manufacture or under the 6 monthly warrant?

Not quite - cars first registered before 1 January 2000 still need six-monthly checks, cars registered after this date fall under the new annual check. This means that despite my two cars being built in the same year, one gets checked annually (registered in 2002 imported) and the other six-monthly (registered 1995 NZ new). I think. :p

1325145 2013-01-27 20:39:00 They say cars registered after Jan 01. 2000 but will that next year creep to Jan 01 . 2001?? It's a bummer that they've made this 6 month on older cars (guess that is a sop to the MTA) as one of my cars is a 1997 Mazda 626 that has only failed a WOF once when the drivers sun visor would not stay up properly. It's serviced at one of the Mazda dealers in Auckland. paulw (1826)
1325146 2013-01-27 20:42:00 Cars need to be under 13yrs old per given year. This year is for cars from 2000 and newer. Comes into effect next year, heard from TV1 news. That means next year the car needs to be 2001 or newer ... One of our cars we may get 3yrs out of it ... before reverting back to 6 months. The other is a 1998. Nomad (952)
