186799 2003-10-26 11:22:00 Hi there all

using S.M.A.R.T technology you can set security on your hard disk,
I have yet to find that technololgy.
Have recently tried HDD Health which is actually a bit buggy but gives you a lot of info

186801 2003-10-26 11:43:00 Ok I am not too sure but I get the impression it is more to do with Laptops and that if someone tries to flog it the disk can be wiped and possibly rendered useless. mikebartnz (21)
186802 2003-10-27 02:25:00 Under windows I found "active smart monitor" to be quite good.

As for the security thing, I just used smartctl under linux to dump all the info for my drive and nothing security related was listed.

They probably only include it on laptop drives.

186803 2003-10-27 05:43:00 You sure you're not getting confused between smart and NTFS?

NTFS will give u security features, if u use 2000 or XP/NT.

The hdds I use, support SMART. I cant see anything saying it has any security features.

186804 2003-10-27 07:32:00 S.M.A.R.T. ( self monitoring and reporting technology ) is there to warn you if the hard drive is about to fail. I don't think it has anything to do with security. Augustus (4490)
186805 2003-10-27 11:22:00 No I am not. NTFS has absolutely nothing to do with this. It is all to do with the modern drive with S.M.A.R.T technology.

Try using the program I mentioned above and you might learn some more.

186806 2003-10-27 11:24:00 If you have the software you must be able to use it with any PC. I have not yet come across the software. mikebartnz (21)
186807 2003-10-28 01:13:00 I don't think security (except as in "reliability= security") is part of the SMART scheme. Many laptops use "proper" passwording of the BIOS as a deterrent to theft and would have SMART technology too. They would be listed as "features" close together in the advertisements, which could lead to confusion. :D Graham L (2)
