2003-10-29 22:37:00 | Download this ftp://download.xtra.co.nz/telecom/netright.isp and run it. This will log you off the internet and directly onto xtra, not onto the internet. It will test the qualitity of your phoneline without the interference of the internet. oh and dont worry its a free service. So if you get the same sort of results you know that its not paradise.

2003-10-29 22:52:00 | My problems started about 3 weeks ago with Paradise Jetstream (full speed) slowing down to a crawl (often less than 10kB/s), depending on time of day. Numbers of calls to the helpdesk didn't get me anywhere. Then I rang Telecom who tested the line (fine) and suggested I log in as user@jetstreamgames.co.nz (using normal password) and then run the 500k speed test at www.jetstreamgames.co.nz/speed. Wow! I got download speeds of 2.6 - 2.9 Mb/s, proving my hardware and the line were in great nick. Of course Telecom then blamed Paradise. Back to Paradise who finally admitted they have a problem with Telecom not being able to provide them with sufficient bandwidth(?) and new equipment was being installed to fix the problem. Should be back to "normal" (a lousy 40kB/s download speed) around mid November. Should I move to Xtra?

2003-10-30 00:24:00 | fergie . seems to me that you must have something misconfigured in your TCP/IP setup . This is a cut and paste for Windows 98 and all the instructions should apply to XP as well . What if I can connect successfully but I keep getting a DNS error message or cannot locate server? A . The two most common reasons for this error include, the address to the site accessed does not exist or the DNS settings on the user's end are not configured . First double-check that the address being accessed is correct . Then check the DNS settings in the Network section of the Control Panel . To check these settings double click on the "My Computer" icon, then double click on the "Control Panel" icon, then double click on the "Network" icon . This is where all of the TCP/IP and Domain Name Server settings are stored . Double-click on the TCP/IP-Dial-Up-Adapter . Make sure to check the following areas under each tab to read as follows: 1 . IP Address should have a black dot in the circle next to "Obtain an IP address automatically . " 2 . WINS Configuration should have a black dot in the circle next to "Disable WINS Resolution . " 3 . Gateway should be blank except for a blinking cursor . 4 . DNS Configuration should have a black dot in the circle next to "Disable DNS" 5 . Go back up to the top and click on the "Bindings" tab and check to see that the words "Client for Microsoft Networks" appear in the white box with a check mark at the left . IF THE WORDS "CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS" DO NOT APPEAR then go back to the "Configuration" tab . Near the center of this screen, press the "Add" button . This will bring up another window . Here you need to highlight the word "Client" and click "Add" at the right . This will bring up yet another window . Here you will need to highlight "Microsoft" on the left and "Client for Microsoft Networks" on the right . Then click the "OK" button toward the bottom . Now the "Primary Network Logon" should say "Client for Microsoft Networks . " Press the "OK" button once more and you will be asked to restart your computer for the settings to take affect . At this point, you do want to restart your computer . If you dont know how to access TCP/IP Go Here ( . cae . wisc . edu/fsg/winxp/winxp-configtcpip . html" target="_blank">www . cae . wisc . edu) . It will show you how ta get access . Don't take any notice of the settings on the link just apply the ones above . I would wait a little and get confirmation from others, of these settings . As I said above I'm not too familiar with XP, but I don't think there is much difference between the W98 and XP settings . Sorry its abit messy I've run out of time . Hope this works for you

2003-10-30 00:47:00 | Rod ger, sorry but those instructions are of no use for XP It is not likely to be a DNS problem anyway as he was getting traffic at one stage and no reason to think they may have changed. It is more likely to be a firewall related or spyware as you suggested originally. Even with the firewall disabled it can still cause problems and spyware such as new.net can block all traffic. I suggest he also delete his dialup connection and setup a new one and also add some extra settings to slow his modem connection as it may be phone line related. When adding extra settings change the port speed to 38400 in Phone and Modems as well as in the Dialup connection properties.

The siet i got the prog from: http://www . cexx . org I went there - to this site: . cexx . org/winsock . htm" target="_blank">www . cexx . org as the readme said go there if ya have troubles your Windows machine's Winsock settings have been corrupted by a program, this procedure MAY restore the defaults . Problem: Computer will dial the Internet as usual, but will no longer connect to Web sites . | 186792 | 2003-10-30 03:39:00 | YEHAAAAAAAAAAAA I fixed it (well, i didn't - but a handy lil prog did) I found this great program - members.shaw.ca in my search - it done exactly wot i wanted it to do - reset TCP/IP and winsock settings back to deafult. Now, i can connect to internet, but i still have 2 prob's. - oh, and by the way - i ran that ISP thing - but when u clik test - nothing happens, i waited 5min - and nothing happenins. Prob ONE - Internet is still REALLY slow - same prob - good for a minute - then dies.... (and internet on this PC seems good) Prob TWO - I have those funny dialog boxes when i turn pc on/off, and press CTRL ALT DEL - intead of having the box withe the options with a pretty pic saying wot to do (reset, off etc) i have a drop down menu, and when i boot up - it asks for my password (which i don't have - i'm only user) and i have to clik ok. So any suggestions on how to fix those 2 probs would be great. Thanks all Alex |

2003-10-31 03:32:00 | Well I bit the bullet today and rang Xtra who set me up with an account and Jetstream connection on the spot. I then connected to Xtra and did a test download (3.5MB aerial photo from LINZ) which screamed in at 250-270 kB/s. Then reconnected to Paradise and downloaded another photo from the same site. Download speed averaged around 7.5 kB/s (for fullspeed Jetstream!) Nuff said. Bye Paradise
