I don't need RAID-0 yet. Not until maybe the new year 2005. I probably will get a 9800pro if I can get it for the same price as a 9700 pro by the time I am building this computer. I might get XP pro IF it is worth it. Is it?

186718 2003-10-28 04:10:00 As I said before, can anyone recommend any good CD-Rom drives? I don't need DVD drives or anything, just a cd-rom drive and a cd-writer. Wilky (776)
186719 2003-10-28 04:52:00 Have you thought of getting a DVD writer;)

My BTC writer has been good(cdr).

186720 2003-10-28 06:21:00 ok couple of points ...........problem possible with win98 and a real good cpu and mobo like that........that system will be capable of and support 'hyperthreading' but ........win98 wont like that at all.......it's not designed to take fulll advantage of that system

other thing.........amount of ram ............waste of time puttin more than 512 mb in with win98 cause 98 wont love that either...............it's limited to 512 ...........

There have been quite a few posts on this in the past. Some brands mentioned have been Lite-On and Asus for writers as well as CD-ROM drives. Sony have good CD-ROM drives also.

186722 2003-10-28 06:33:00 Forgot to mention that it would pay to investigate what software the writer comes with. Nero appears to be the most popular. Fire-and-Ice (3910)
186723 2003-10-28 06:49:00 Win 98 doesn't support hyperthreading. Your monitor is pretty low-end, and so is your CD-writer. Agree with SY and get at least 1gig if not 2 gigs DDR.

186724 2003-10-28 07:19:00 nice system however u will find your getting outta the 'bang for buck' range.

you should really go for a system that cost around $3000 to get a good balance of price and performance.

for the internet maybe consider an ADSL modem?

instead of windows XP you could use Windows 2000. Windows XP is just a graphical extension of Win2k (which is an upgrade on Win NT).

Maybe you should price the same specs on an AMD system... 3000+ Barton w/ Epox mobo.

With if u really want speed u could get two 60's (or wht ever) and set them to Raid.

Except that Win2k doesn't support hyperthreading either...
