Depends how you set it up as far as speed goes. I haven't had any speed issues with XP.

You can always make it 'look' like 98 if you want that interface :)

186707 2003-10-26 08:08:00 Way slower?...on the right hardware its instantanious.Plus all the bells and whistles can be turned off,and if your worried about the speed it runs games and whatnot, check out the orb at madonion,i think you will find all the top speedsters are running winxp.... metla (154)
186708 2003-10-26 08:10:00 As for the interface, the first thing i do after sitting down at any xp machine is get rid of that awful start menu they put into her,I hate that with a passion.

But it still only takes a couple clicks of the mouse to change it to the windows classic layout.

The second thing i do is force it to stop hiding icons in the taskbar, thats another grand move of theirs i just can't see any sence in...

P4 3 . 2 with 512MB ram? Personally, if you want the latest P4 3 . 2, then get 1GB of memory if not 2GB . I would go for a slight higher hard drive, if you can see what I mean, I'd personally match them like, Top (latest) with Top (latest) . Are you sure you dont want a 17" LCD? Why not get a DVD rom with DVD-RW . After all, your seeking the latest of everything arent you . If you can afford P4 3 . 2 surely, you can afford a DVD-RW instead of a CD-RW

So i presume you want a pretty upmarket computers, I honestly believe there is no need to go over $3000 for a desktop computer . Buying the latest equipment will not help, because no matter what, it is going to be only a few month before it is off the selves .

But personally your kind of configuration is far beyond my thoughts, even if I had the money . I see it as been wasteful to buy the most expensive, only to find week by week day by day that it is dropping heavily in price . Personally I'd go for *if I was in your situation* P4 2 . 66 800FSB 512DDR (or 1 GB if image editing is important) DVD-Rw, 17" LCD, 120GB+ HDD depending on many factors . . . .

Also I'd definitely go Windows Xp Professional (make sure it IS pro ed) as if you get to know it . . . you will dump previously Window Editions out the 'real' window . . . You can get rid of the candy start bar into its classic styles should you dislike the default . You can set the majority of the settings as if you were in Win98, to sum up, theres not much things Win98 has n WinXP doesnt or cant do .

Hope you don't take my opinions seriously, as I believe you may have some needs which I'm not aware of

Good luck,

186710 2003-10-26 09:10:00 U mean the 2.6 at 800?? The 2.66 runs at 533.
I am doing my own bit of research. Still thinking :D

186711 2003-10-26 09:12:00 Yea, for that specifications i would prefer 2x 512MB for dual channel.
What about the speakers?

186713 2003-10-26 21:22:00 May as well get a gig of ram and XP . A few turn offs for XP and me:
I reformat very often- a habit . XP makes this difficult .
No more true dos!
I have a friend who uses XP . It runs slowly and crashes all the time .
Product activation .

Ah well, the good thing about XP is that you can get the "ThemeXP" program so I may as well get XP .
Also, what CD-Rom drives would you recommend? I want a fast CD-ROM drive and a fast cd writer preferably in black, since all my components are that colour . I don't need a dvd writer since backup will be with the external hdd, and I'm not gonna get into video editing until DV cams have come down in price and gone up in quality, and by that time this computer I am building will be the print server and a homework/web browsing pc (also for some network gaming) and I will have a top of the line computer with RAID-0 and max power .

A few examples of the software I will be running:
Battlefield 1942
Rise of Nations
Age of Mythology
No one lives forever 2
Doom III
Half Life 2
Unreal Tournament 2004

Plus the Macromedia Studio MX 2004, Photoshop 7, etc .

186714 2003-10-26 21:23:00 And what are the advantages of XP Pro over XP home? I don't need remote access. Wilky (776)
186715 2003-10-27 00:11:00 There are a lot more advantages to XP Pro than XP Home, its been asked frequently at this site and all around the world. Try these pages here (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) and here (http://www.google.co.nz) ;)

For Doom3 you might want a 9800pro, but you could wait to upgrade later when it comes out.

Also for raid-0 you will need at least 2 hard drives, and hopefully you motherboard supports raid otherwise you'll have to get a controller. Often people using raid-0 have a 3rd drive for error checking and backup.
