187169 2003-10-28 04:53:00 Last week I wrote that the CR2032 lithium cell used for RTC/CMOS memory was "about the size of a sixpence". I was told I was wrong, and it's actually about the size of a 10c piece.

I WUZ WRONG. I had actually written "size of a 10c piece", but I thought. I thought: "wrong!", and I wrote, more accurately, "sixpence". I knew I'd get some bites. ;-)

A sixpence is 19 mm diamter. A shilling (:D) is 23 mm diameter.

A CR2032 is 20 mm diameter. That's the same size as a farthing. B-)

187170 2003-10-28 06:35:00 ........and a halfpenny was 1 inch diameter fairly exactly :D

Now this is the "value" of rote learning;

12 pence = 1 shilling
18 pence =1/6d
24 pence = 2 shillings (a floreign)
30 pence = 2/6d (half a crown)
40 pence = 3/4d
60 pence= 5 shillings (a "dollar" pre-war US$)
120 pence= 10 shillings
240 pence= £1

Now in the UK we had 12 sided brass theepenny bits, dont think you had them here.
They made useful vibration meters by standing them upright on a suitable part of ones motorbike crankcase.
Only the Vincent was smooth enough to be able to rev the engine without the 3d bit falling over........true...!!!

187172 2003-10-28 07:23:00 The basic unit of money in Suriname; equal to 100 cents is a Florin.

Seemed to stand ok on the old Roller.

187174 2003-10-28 11:29:00 What was the 22 shillings called. I seem to remember it had a lot to do with racing ( eg Nags) mikebartnz (21)
187175 2003-10-28 11:33:00 Shove a Happeny wasn't a bad game either. (Please excuse the spelling) mikebartnz (21)
187176 2003-10-28 17:14:00 You might be thinking of 21 shillings = One pound 1 shilling.
Also called a Guinea.

187177 2003-10-28 18:49:00 Can anyone remember what a 'Honolulu' penny was ? :)

Clue: it had to with a trident.
