187071 2003-10-27 21:00:00 As a result of a major mishap all my e-mail messages in outlook express have been deleted along with other files. I have recovered other critical files with a recovery utility but cant don't know where OE hides the emails.

The OS is W2K.

What files should I be looking for and where do they go when I find them.

187072 2003-10-27 21:17:00 The OE Identity folder is located, by default, in the Identities folder which is a subfolder of the Application Data folder .

The Application Data folder is located within the hidden Local Settings folder within the user profile folder in Documents and Settings .
Usual file extensions are dbx .

If using a message store, this location may be elsewhere .

The Address Book folder is located in the Microsoft folder under the hidden Application Data folder .
This folder is different to that mentioned above .

The hidden Application Data folder is directly under the user profile folder in Documents and Settings .
Usual file extension is wab .

187073 2003-10-27 22:00:00 You are looking for files with the dbx extension, for example inbox.dbx They are in a hidden folder, but recovery software should ignore it as it is a windows thing.
If you locate them, save them to a folder, then use the OE file-import function to get them into your existing OE.

187074 2003-10-27 22:40:00 I have had success in recovering some deleted emails in the past by using DBXtract (recover mode) to extract emails from the Deleted Items.dbx file. This will not work if the file has been compacted however. tommy (2826)
187075 2003-10-28 20:57:00 Thanks for the DBXtract lead. I managed to get some of the deleted files back but sadly most had been written over and the undelete programme I used to get the DBXs couldn't recover sufficient to let DBXtract do its bit.

Cheers
