187067 2003-10-27 08:29:00 Hi all,
Got apache up & running sweet om my RedHat9.0 box
Got msql running
Got Samba working both ways & all is well.
But..
I tried setting up the ftp and I can't logon, keeps telling me computer is disconnected or I don't have permission.
Here is the setup

groupadd www
useradd -g www -d /var/www/html ftpuser (made 4 users)
passwd ftpuser (made 4 passwords)
chown ftpuser:www /var/www/html (when I do this I get a too few arguments error)
chmod 7777 /var/www/html
cp /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf /etc/vsftpd.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart

Restarts ok
Try 'ftp localhost'
Try 'ftp 192.168.0.7'
And get the no access errors etc
Can anyone see where I've gone wrong?
Thanks

187068 2003-10-27 09:26:00 Hi there.

Ive set myself up a server running vsftpd in the past, and will be doing so again in a few days.

Look up some posts by Chilling_Silence (Me also) on the topic.

You may want to post the contents of all files (removing the non-relevant comment bits) labelled vsftpd in the /etc and /etc/vsftpd folders.

If you're running RH 9 though, its cos its setup by default to run as a standalone app and not under inetd or xinetd. :-)
Try running:
redhat-config-services
as root, and that should let your start, stop, and restart it.

Either that, or use chkconfig to do the same from Command line!

Cheers

187069 2003-10-28 00:48:00 The thing used to be (and I suspect that it wouldn't be changed) that the /etc/ftpuser file contained the names of those who do not have access. :D (It might have been created with everyone excluded by default.) root was always the first name in it, for obvious reasons.

I don't like 777 rights ... the world should never have RWE, so 775 would be better. (But: I suppose this is so you can ftp into it ... Apache should own it; does Apache still work> :D)

You might need to add your group members' names into the /etc/groups file. (check it, anyway)
