186815 2003-10-26 16:21:00 Hi
Have been using XP for some time without too much complaint. However there is one thing that continually frustrates me.
"FOLDER SETTINGS."
Why does xp not remember folder settings even tho it is enabled in the folder options
Three main problems come to mind:
1. Folders continually revert to thumbnail view (I only want that for folders with my jpeg,s) even tho I choose tile settings.

2. My music folder (which contains all my cd's copied to hard drive as mp3's) continually lists song in alphabetical order rather than track number which I select every time I go to the folder (each album is in a seperate folder)

3. Manually having to set the same option for every folder ie Selecting all my music folders, right clicking, select properties, customise , folder template, (MUSIC).
Click apply but folders do not change so had to go thru and change each folder manually
any ideas, fixes to stop this annoying problem would be appreciated thanks

186816 2003-10-26 19:18:00 Are you finding if you set one folder for tiles and another for details, you end up with them all being one or the other?

You can change this so that each folder displays and sticks to the preference that you have chosen. It does however involve an registry hack. I have done this myself and it works wonders for me :)

This registry hack was kindly provided by Babe Ruth in a post ages ago:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please backup your registry first

Click START | RUN and in the run box type REGEDIT and press OK
navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\BagMRU

Export this key by right clicking on the keyname and selecting EXPORT and giving an appropriate name and folder path, once exported delete the key. Do the same for the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell NoRoam\Bags

Restart Windows to take effect. You can now modify each folders settings and they should stay put.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: where it says to export the key with an appropriate name and folder path, just name the file "folder_views" and make a new folder under C:\ called "Regbackupkeys". By saving the exported key (before deleting it), it mean you can simply double click on the saved key and it will be merged back into the registry if at a later time you wish to undo this registry hack.

186817 2003-10-26 19:22:00 Oops - hit post instead of preview ....

Further to the notes, remember there are two keys to export and save, so called the second key "folder_views2" to differentiate them. Exporting only makes a copy, so you will still need to delete them afterwards from the registry (this can cause confusion to the registry newbie)

Let us know how you get on :)
