generally autos have 3-4 gears and it automaticly selects which gear is required and each gear has a different ratio. CVT is a little bit different in that it dosn't have different gears, it simply adjusts the gear ratio to suit whats required.

from what i have heard many years ago CVT was fairly useless, relability problems with heavier cars so i would be inclined to treat it carefully with big loads.

personally i'm a manual person. however the 2 cases where auto are good is behind a big V8 or a real offroad 4x4 (not one of those city never see mud 4x4's ;-) lol)

187100 2003-10-28 09:48:00 Unlike normal automatic gearboxes, the "gear changes" are seamless . Until you get used to it, the effect is quite eerie . The engine note rises and lowers seemingly regardless of throttle position, but everything happens as it should . Press the pedal and it goes without a single clunk from the gearbox as it changes ratio .

Inside the box there are two variable diameter pulleys connected by a steel belt in place of the usual gear and shaft clusters . The other big benefit of this system is that when you lift off the gas it induces engine braking .

187101 2003-10-28 10:05:00 My lawnmower uses that system for an infinitely variable drive ratio as well. And it tows a trailer.

My wife isnt allowed near the MX5, unless it's lounging over the bonnet in a seductive pose, or riding as a passenger ...

Still sulking, as I just sold her BMW.

Hope she doesnt see this

Do you sit in the trailer when you are mowing the lawns GF?

187103 2003-10-29 07:54:00 well mine is a V6 4 litre one that sees, town and country as it follows the guys around the paddocks nicely with me driving.....
so it gets muddy, .....

not as muddy as there race jeeps, but a nice covering, and it has air con which theres doesnt.....LOL

and i dont roll mine regularly either,

we also have a vast range of stockcars at our disposal and derby cars plus a boat or too around the vicinity so engines are not all auto here, apart from hubby's pride and joy, which i drive.... :p
and i can double clutch with the best of em....
and so if being a girl is a problem...... then so is being a guy.... as they have no idea of explaining anything to us... when it comes to mechanics .... apart from how to do up a race belt and to say hold on...
:p
but they never think we might want to know any other bits either,

but then we dont have time to listen we work, (all i seem to do)

i dont beleive in throwing gender in people's faces and it does not matter to me if a male or female is asking for help, if i can help thats good if i cant someone else is bound to know.

so next time T i may not reply cos your'e male...... :p

187104 2003-10-29 08:01:00 With an infinitely variable gearbox you should be able to tow the Queen Mary. Of course you'd have to go to Long Beach first and then mount caterpillar tracks on the Diahatsu to get power to the ground but just think of the possibilities...... Winston001 (3612)
187105 2003-10-29 08:06:00 For pity's sake Tom, this is the Land of Barry Crump.
