There may not be a huge difference, but there is a difference. We have 3 or 4 Unix servers at work. The 2 or 3 Unix versions used on these servers were nowhere near being free, and I don't believe Microsoft has ever seen Unix as a threat, and as far as I'm aware they've been working alongside Unix platforms for years.
