2003-10-27 21:02:00 | how do u reformat ur disk ...........and how to create a backup before that ??? | PCcoNZ (4786) | |
2003-10-27 21:17:00 | your better off learning how to repair/maintain your pc and setup windows correctly rather than just format/reinstall every time a problem arrises. format/reinstalling is just a easy way out. its a fair bit of work and you may not even fix the problem. you really need to post more info on youir problem eg what programs you are useing at the time, when is it going slow, any error messages etc. more info the better.

2003-10-27 22:50:00 | The forum has a selection of FAQs (click the link at the top right of this page) that will tell you how to clear out temporary files, backup your data and other maintenance tasks. If you are determined to reformat there is also a FAQ on that but it would be wise to try a clean up and some maintenance first. | tommy (2826) | |
2003-10-27 22:51:00 | Forgot to mention that the FAQs sometimes take a while to load so be patient. | tommy (2826) | |
2003-10-27 23:09:00 | If you do decide to reformat, look up reformat and back up apps in google,I did and I am still here even though somewhat greyer;) | Thomas (1820) | |
2003-10-28 02:23:00 | Hmm...Tweak'e is quite right and I have to say this, all this advice all the time about "reformatting" and re-installing is just a cop-out by those who dont know how to maintain their computers, or how to put right a minor problem. My advice to newcomers is that doing that is an absolute last resort, and it is much better to find out the answer to the problem by searching the Net, reading a decent book etc. The problem with PF1 replies is sorting out the wheat from the chaff, before rushing off and trying all the varying advice (including mine :) ), and then finding there is an even bigger problem. Of course there are some on this site who are compulsive reformatters, perhaps they have become addicted to it ? :)

2003-10-28 21:00:00 | Bringing together some of the various advice given, here are some sites where freeware utils can be downloaded: spybot (http://spybot.eon.net.au/) for getting rid of spyware. Ad-Aware (www.lavasoftusa.com) for getting rid of spyware. Easycleaner (www.toniarts.com) this is good as a free general disk and registry cleaner AdIEfltr (tvsecure.net) this is the earlier freeware version of AdIEfltr. It is a plugin for Internet Explorer and will kill popups and banner advertising. Works well with Win9x/XP. AVG (www.grisoft.com) from this site you can get the free version of the antivirus program AVG. Then in addition you have the built in Windows tools. Though some of the shareware utils like System Mechanic, and Registry First aid do an excellent job of cleaning up rubbish, the freeware programs above will be enough to give even a cluttered computer a good clean out.
