186966 2003-10-27 09:53:00 You mention " no floppy "

Are you thinking about booting off a floppy to change the O/S?

Quite a few laptops and Desktops will boot of the CDRom drive these days.

186968 2003-10-27 11:17:00 The Inspiron 5100 does not include floppy. Dell says it can be upgraded for $58.50 as a external drive.

If u are looking into upgrading, why not a desktop?? I was thinking about this $1700 without CD drives, monitor, mouse/keyb, no speakers I could of got a 3.2 FSB 800, 1GB RAM, 80GB S-ATA, 3D card setup box. Its a lot cheaper and much flexible.

Are u a student or what is ur primary use?
After using 4 lappies at uni for 6yrs and needing to relocate. I think lappies are not essential. $$ and u don't need the portability, it sits there collecting dust all yr round. Postage is not expensive. Upgrades can easily be tripled like the RAM and such. After one yr ur flash laptop will lose 40% value. When u cannot upgrade it, it becomes a tool and not a hobby ..... no 5.1 sound, small screen, small keyb for typists.., dan mouse. Maybe I have used lappies too long... Sony is pricey thou.. Sony Style ... like their slogan. Quite a newer laptop brand thou... Try to get a mobile version of the cpu. Not being able to change the motherboard and video really bugs me. I did thought that it was fine .. now my opinion has changed, I want really fast graphics and 5.1 !!

I have compared Dell for people of other countries. They seemed to be more or less the same price in NZ after FX conversion... If Dell, u mind as get it here... models will be the same ... Hey, where in the world where cannot u get 3.2 ghz?? If u thinking of lack of models, then its more the asian *more* local brands. For branding ones, NZ seems to have all if not most most of them ... perhaps jus a different configuration like hdd and ram diff and perhaps a diff optical drive and a diff windowsversion.

186969 2003-10-27 11:24:00 Jus re read ur post. U are a student. Ok, the above concerns u then. :D nomad (3693)
186970 2003-10-27 11:27:00 For school work, floppy will be required. CD will be used for own work only... Definiely get floppy.

If u living on uni properties try to see if u can access the uni's ethernet network or wirless (if they have this), ultra cheap super broadband. they prevent mp3 msn. u can try a HTTP TUNNEL software may or may not work. ICQ runs via HTTPS.

186971 2003-10-29 07:21:00 Sorry for the late reply, been studying hard.... exams very soon.

I think I might be going back in the christmas time (when exams are over)

Perhaps it is better for me to check out the market first hand, and see how everything compares. I think perhaps if i'm investing into something so expensive i might need to actually check it out myself and see if it actually suits my needs.

Back to study!! hahahha. What a great life I have.

Thx for all the help
