187076 2003-10-27 20:50:00 Anybody know if CVT is suitable for towing.
Been told it isn't but can't find definitive answer.

187077 2003-10-27 21:25:00 But for towing what sort of load?

It would be adequate for towing the skin off a rice pudding, for instance, but not for tow-starting a Mack truck ...

And in between, quite possibly OK. Or not. Depends on the load.

187079 2003-10-27 22:44:00 Constant Velocity Transmission.
or
Continuously Variable Transmission

Where the engine sits at a steady speed, and the transmission shifts smoothly in a continuously variable way, and not in "steps" or "gears" as in a standard automatic transmission.

Look it up on Google.

I occasionally tow a load of timber,say 1/2 a ton.

Constantly variable transmission.

187081 2003-10-28 01:20:00 I remember a 50cc stepthrough with CVT . I don't think that could tow much .

If yours is a Merivale 4WD shopping trolley, a lot of them have a plate by the towbar attachment, which says what the maximum load is . Some allow as much as 250kg . :D

I think the only realistic answer is: "It depends" .

187082 2003-10-28 02:07:00 A deciding factor would be the vehicle size and engine capacity. The CVT should be rated accordingly.

A small Daihatsu with CVT has an engine size of 659 cc.
Thats likely to be a problem, as the doors may never shut again after towing 1/2 tonne anyway, disregarding the CVT.

If they sell the same or similar model to yours new, ring the dealer pretending to be interested.

187084 2003-10-28 02:37:00 Why the preference for CVT Thomas? For towing trailers (or any motoring for that matter, biassed) I prefer the hands on approach.
